Season 2 of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime chronicles a critical episode from Satoru Gojo’s youth in which his best friend Suguru Geto decides that the world would be better off without any non-sorcerers. During a joint interview with several members of Jujutsu Kaisen‘s cast and crew, director Shota Goshozono explained the reason for what he refers to as Geto’s “fall into darkness.”
In Jujutsu Kaisen, Geto is introduced as a talented sorcerer with purely noble ambitions. However, his resolve falters after an eye-opening incident involving two child sorcerers and a town driven mad with grief and anger. Per Oricon, Goshozono discusses how, for him, Geto’s fall from grace is also related to the ongoing struggles within the larger jujutsu sorcerer community. “For [Gojo’s Past arc], I had my own theme in mind: how to interpret the reasons for Geto’s fall into darkness and his actions and incorporate them into the anime…as a result, I came to the interpretation that Geto’s actions for killing non-sorcerers and creating a world of sorcerers alone were not something he did on his own, but rather that Geto’s own stress piled on top of the mountain of stress that the world of sorcery had been building up for a long time, until he finally broke through and took action.”
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Season 2 Director Explains the Reason for Geto’s Ultimate Betrayal
According to Goshozono, his version of Gojo’s past deliberately contrasts a “bright and fun” coming-of-age tale against later events in order to heighten the impact of the arc’s grim conclusion. “I think one of the charms of Jujutsu Kaisen is that it defies expectations in a good way…the story goes from a bright and fun coming-of-age movie about Gojo and Geto to a complete turnaround with Riko’s death, which leads to a rift between Gojo and Geto. That’s the biggest ‘betrayal’ in the story. [Once] we got to that big betrayal,’ I was conscious of going all out and creating the complete opposite of a bright and fun coming-of-age movie to create an emotional gap.”
The “Gojo’s Past” arc serves as a highly emotional preface to Jujutsu Kaisen‘s “Shibuya Incident” arc, in which Gojo is confronted by Kenjaku — a powerful cursed entity who has taken over Geto’s body in order to bring about the world once envisioned by the late sorcerer. Jujutsu Kaisen‘s sequel anime, currently in production at Studio MAPPA, will chronicle the events of the “Culling Game” arc — a high-stakes battle royale created to spearhead humanity’s evolution. After finding out that Megumi Fushiguro’s sister Tsumiki is participating, Yuji, Megumi and Nobara Kugisaki enter into order to protect her from Kenjaku’s dark scheme. MAPPA has not yet revealed an official release window or full trailer for the anime.
