Shokugeki no Soma, Not Just a Cooking Anime – MasterChef Indonesia has just entered its seventh season. I, who have been following this cooking show since its first season, remember one of the cooking-themed anime that I watched a few months ago, namely Shokugeki no Soma. Yes, this is an anime that is sometimes used as material for YouTube content for Chef Arnold, one of the judges for MasterChef Indonesia. Even though this anime seems to be “only” about the culinary world, I really enjoyed watching it—it was so exciting!

Shokugeki no Soma tells the story of Yukihira Soma, a 15 year old teenager who is good at cooking and owns a food stall business with his father. One day, his father enrolled Soma in Totsuki Academy, an elite culinary school in Japan. At first Soma was reluctant, but in the end he accepted and entered the school.

Totsuki Academy has a kind of tradition called shokugeki, aka food fights. This tradition is usually held if there is a problem between Totsuki students (such as fighting over positions in certain organizations or even fighting over land for club activities). Apart from that, Totsuki has a supreme body called the Elite Ten. This body is like an OSIS, but they have the right to make certain rules and decisions that the entire school, even the School Council, must obey!

When he had just moved to Totsuki, Soma met one of the Elite Ten members, Nakiri Erina. Erina was really annoyed with Soma from the start because she gave the impression that Soma was too calm , even though at Totsuki the competition between students was really tight. Since the first day of moving in, Soma has made an announcement to his fellow new students that he only sees Totsuki as a stepping stone. Annoying, right?

Even so, Soma can still be friends with Totsuki’s fellow students, really. Most of his friends are fellow residents of the Polar Star hostel. This dormitory will later become a second home and family for Soma in Totsuki—and accompany Soma through the obstacles he faces at school.

If summarized, this anime focuses on Soma who often challenges or is challenged to shokugeki by other people, usually those who have expertise in a certain culinary field. Because Soma is the main character, it’s natural to assume he will keep winning shokugeki. However, in reality Soma actually had to admit defeat several times.

For me, the fact that Soma doesn’t always win shokugeki is actually a plus point in terms of character. Because he lost several times, we know that Soma doesn’t always rely on his talent and wants to learn from these defeats. We also see how Soma has a very competitive spirit: he always tries to outsmart the prowess of his very skilled opponents in order to win the shokugeki. In short, Soma looks human and doesn’t seem OP or overpowered.

Speaking of characters, the characters in this anime are quite diverse. One of the points that I like is that the character development is not “forced”. There are a lot of characters in this anime—aside from Soma, of course—who initially seem annoying, arrogant, arrogant, and the like, but over time they become quite likeable.

In terms of story, I think the plot is somewhat of a template: Soma is faced with a problem, Soma is challenged/challenged by a shokugeki, Soma practices cooking, the shokugeki is implemented, then Soma or his opponent wins. Just like that for several episodes. This is a minus point of this anime, although as it gets here the plot starts to vary a bit. Even so, the storyline is still fun enough to enjoy, really!

Still discussing the story, even though the plot seems templated, the story telling is quite smooth. The example that I think is most obvious is when Soma befriends his opponents in the previous shokugeki. At first they were enemies, but in the next few episodes Soma and his opponents slowly started to form friends. This actually benefits Soma because they are the ones who help Soma when he is faced with the upcoming shokugeki. It was so smooth, I just realized that Soma had already become friends with them after a few episodes.

When watching Shokugeki no Soma , we will often be presented with various delicious dishes made with ingredients and techniques that seem very sophisticated. If we are unfamiliar with the culinary world, it might seem like the dishes, ingredients and cooking techniques in this anime seem far-fetched, but they’re actually not! Almost all the knowledge about the culinary world that exists here actually exists in the real world. Chef Arnold has tried the recipes and techniques from this anime several times, so he is approved by a real chef.

Oh yes, one thing that is worth noting is that Shokugeki no Soma is actually an ecchi anime (no need for me to explain in detail what ecchi is). One point that I noticed from several netizen comments is that the sexual content in this type of anime usually seems excessive and actually interferes with the main story of the anime itself.

But the good thing is, Shokugeki no Soma can place this content in the right portions and somehow it makes sense. How come? The thing is, even in the real world, I often find people who say that delicious food gives the same delicious sensation when having sex. That’s what he said, I don’t know either.

In short, I think Shokugeki no Soma is really fun to follow. Not only will we be entertained by the storyline, but we will also gain a lot of knowledge about the culinary world. In fact, if we really want to, we can just copy the recipes in the anime. Shokugeki no Soma can be watched on Netflix, friends!
