Rody’s Growth is Admirable and Complex in My Hero Academia

During the World Heroes’ Mission movie, Rody Soul goes on an incredible journey that sees him start off as a cynical and self-preserving character who takes on whatever jobs he can find to help support his family. In the end, Rody begins to understand the complexities of being a hero thanks to his time spent with Midoriya.

In a heart-to-heart conversation, Rody confides in Midoriya that he thinks heroes just want to make money under the pretense of saving people. Luckily, Deku proved to Rody that not all heroes are like this, and Rody has a turning point where he begins to open up and reveal more about himself.

By the end of World Heroes’ Mission, Rody’s incredible character growth sees him fighting side by side with Midoriya as they confront the corrupt Humarise head on. Rody eventually gains the courage to help the Heroes defeat the cult after learning they were responsible for his father’s death — and Rody even risks his own life to help the Heroes save the world.

My Hero Academia is a high-stakes and high-paced anime, where the cast of Heroes goes up against evil villains in an effort to save the day and keep the world safe. At times, this can feel pretty black-and-white, with characters feeling entirely good or entirely evil. Rody Soul’s past, filled with questionable deeds, keeps him from being wholly good — but as he journeys with Midoriya and lets his guard down, he proves to be a hero nonetheless.

Rody’s journey to more traditional heroism is a much more realistic take than My Hero Academia usually offers. It also highlights an important part of being a hero in the real world — Rody doesn’t wear a flashy costume or take on a superhero title, but in the end, he chooses to do what is right, and that is what matters most of all.

Fans of My Hero Academia admire Rody’s true sense of heroism, even if it doesn’t conform to the mold that most heroes in the franchise tend to occupy. His final actions during World Heroes’ Mission ultimately align with the true essence of being a hero, even if it doesn’t make him a celebrated one whose name is celebrated in the news.

My Hero Academia: Why This Side Character Remains a Fan-Favorite

In My Hero Academia, Izuku Midoriya navigates a world where most of the human population has gained superpowers called Quirks. Despite being born without a Quirk, Midoriya still dreams of becoming a superhero, and his life changes forever when he is scouted by the world’s greatest hero, All Might, who realizes his potential and enrolls him in the prestigious high school for young superheroes.

While My Hero Academia explores Midoriya’s adventures as he works to become a powerful hero, the series boasts an amazing and diverse cast — with each character bringing unique powers and backstories to the show’s narrative. One of these characters, Rody Soul, has quickly become a fan favorite in the My Hero Academia fandom, thanks to his grounded view of what it means to be a hero that offers a fresh perspective not often seen in the series. With Rody recently making his anime debut during My Hero Academia‘s Final War Arc, now is the perfect time to take a closer look at the character and see why fans love him so much.

Fans of My Hero Academia will likely recognize Rody Soul from the World Heroes’ Mission movie, the third animated film in the franchise which debuted in 2021. Those who have only seen the anime will be less familiar with the character, with Rody recently debuting in Episode 156 during the Final War Arc. Rody Soul is a young hero who lives in Otheon, but his acts of heroism aren’t his primary objective like much of My Hero Academia‘s cast.

While Rody is a compassionate character who fights for what is right, he isn’t innately driven by idealistic views of heroism like other characters. Instead, his approach is more down-to-earth — especially when contrasted next to larger-than-life heroes like All Might and Deku. These parts of Rody’s personality make him a very relatable character, and he’s able to show another side of heroism. Through Rody, My Hero Academia proves that sometimes, being a hero is about actions rather than titles or celebrity status.

My Hero Academia’s Weakest Pro Heroes Always Have Something to Give

While there is little else to know about a minor character like Manual personally, the My Hero Academia anime does have plenty to say about pro heroes and even antiheroes found in the same category. Manual isn’t the only pro hero or crime fighter who appears just often enough to establish their schtick and contribute one minor thing before backing off to let the headliner heroes resume their own work. Such characters, no matter their minimal screen time, may have a lasting impact on the pro heroes and talented students around them, allowing them to have an outsized impact on the flow of events. In other cases, these “filler” heroes may not change someone’s life but still fill important gaps in showing fans how this industry works. The pro hero industry can’t just be populated with All Might and Endeavor clones who fight with power alone, because even with a hundred All Mights, some skills and abilities would be missing, and that would cause problems.

That is why the My Hero Academia world needs “meh” pro heroes like Endeavor, Gunhead, Ms. Joke, and Mandalay to round out the pro hero industry and diversify the Quirk pool with abilities that no Smash attack or Prominence Burn could ever fill. The industry needs more than sheer combat power, after all, especially since some jobs never call for that in the first place. Alone or in teams, second-rate heroes like Manual can make all the difference, and given the importance of keeping Tomura’s Quirks offline, fans might say that Manual is the best second-rate hero in the entire franchise. Without his simple yet important water Quirk, Tomura would have already slaughtered all the pro heroes with his own copy of All For One and all its Quirks.

Something similar can be said about the other pro heroes in Manual’s category, such as Gunhead, who taught Ochaco Uraraka the important skill of unarmed combat. With that skill, Ochaco had handled the knife-wielding villain Himiko Toga, something she wouldn’t have learned at UA. Then there’s Ms. Joke, a pro hero and teacher at Ketsubutsu who has exactly the right personality to motivate and empower her students while educating them, and the hero school industry always has need of such charismatic leadership, even if Ms. Joke’s combat power is limited. Something similar can be said about Mandalay and her non-violent Telepath Quirk, which is the key to managing any evacuation effort with ease. Even the minor villain La Brava returned to turn her hacker skills into a matter of life and death, with her counting Skeptic’s own hacking to keep the Coffin in the Sky aloft and protect the lives of every pro hero in it.

This My Hero Academia Side Character is The Most Important In The Series

Across the span of seven anime seasons and counting, My Hero Academia has introduced viewers to an entire industry’s worth of pro heroes, with a select few being the most powerful and important, such as the symbol of peace, All Might. But the hero industry can’t be made up entirely of heroes of All Might’s and Endeavor’s caliber. It also needs everyday pro heroes like Manual to fill in the ranks, and heroes like Manual should not be underestimated.

It’s true that heroes in Manual’s league could never defeat the strongest villains, nor will they ever be serious contenders for the top 10 in the Japanese pro hero charts. Still, Deku’s world doesn’t need everyone to be symbol of peace tier, and everyday heroes like Manual have more appeal than viewers might expect. Best of all, no matter their modest combat power, heroes like Manual still have unique gifts that shine at the right moment, accomplishing incredible things that a Texas Smash never could.

Manual is one of many pro heroes who helped fill in the gaps in My Hero Academia‘s narrative, adding some rich variety to the massive pro hero industry in between scenes for superstars like Hawks and Best Jeanist. Manual is a brown-haired man in his late 20s named Masaki Mizushima, making him old enough to serve as an experienced mentor for someone like Tenya Iida while also being young enough to be somewhat relatable to UA’s teenage student heroes. In fact, that was how Manual was introduced, being Tenya’s mentor during the internship arc that followed the UA sports festival story arc. That particular story arc was a fine opportunity to expand the pro hero industry with some new faces, Manual among them.

Manual is mildly compelling on two levels, starting with his pro hero persona. Manual has an unnamed water manipulation Quirk that allows him to control pre-existing water, though unlike heroes like Shoto Todoroki and Mina Ashido, Manual cannot create the materials he uses, so he is reliant on having water nearby to function as a hero. Such a Quirk isn’t terribly impressive compared to the likes of Fierce Wings and Rabbit, but it does add some variety, with remarkably few Quirks using water, even if fans count Shoto’s ice creation. Manual also has a refreshingly simple and intuitive costume design, making him almost look like a mer-man superhero with his light blue outfit and a helmet featuring a fish-like fin made of white material. He’s not a visual marvel, but Manual is easy to figure out at a glance, at least.

Manual is also mildly likable on a personal level, simply because there is nothing complicated or subversive about his design. He is nothing more or less than a courageous, responsible, and friendly man who wants to protect and inspire people as a pro hero, making him one of the most “typical” heroes to appear in the entire franchise. Such a straightforward and baseline mentality may seem boring in a vacuum since it has little depth, but it does provide a much-needed contrast with the anime’s most high-strung or morally ambiguous characters. An extreme case is the redemption arc of Endeavor, with Manual being his exact opposite as a relaxed, uncomplicated water hero while Endeavor is a complex hero with blistering flames. Manual is a “back to basics” hero who keeps everything grounded by reminding everyone that not every pro hero’s career needs to be an emotionally tense puzzle.

Forced Quirk Activation is a Rare Ability That All For One Mishandles Often

The Forced Quirk Activation Quirk is perfectly named, being an invisible Quirk that simply forces the activation of someone else’s Quirk, usually with a touch. All For One first used Forced Activation Quirk in Kamino Ward, channeling it through the Rivet Stab Quirk while harmlessly impaling Magne with the latter Quirk. That manually activated Magne’s own Magnetism Quirk even though Magne was unconscious, magnetizing all the male villains toward Himiko Toga so that group could be pushed through the Warp Gate Quirk.

Notably, Forced Quirk Activation can be used even if the target is unconscious, and as expected, this Quirk can be used against the target’s will. The main limitation is that the user must know how the target’s own Quirk functions in order to force its activation, so typically, this Quirk will be used on an ally or perhaps even a known enemy.

This devastating Quirk is one of All For One’s most potent techniques, though using it comes at a cost, which is why the symbol of evil didn’t use it more often in My Hero Academia‘s story. Impure Beam will charge up in the user’s hand, then fire a powerful beam of dazzling light that can deal serious damage to any target, even a massive character like Gigantomachia as Season 7 of the anime clearly showed. Firing this Quirk will strain the user’s body, and since All For One was operating on borrowed time, he was cautious about using this Quirk. When using Impure Beam, All For One stressed his body and accelerated his reverse-aging, ensuring he wouldn’t use this incredible Quirk too often.

Search is one of the most recent additions to All For One’s Quirk collection, and it’s one of the few Quirks where anime fans know the original owner and saw the consequences of Quirk theft. The Search Quirk originally belonged to Ragdoll, a member of the Wild, Wild Pussycats team, pro heroes who use their Quirks to perform search and rescue operations. Since Search can locate someone whom the user has observed before, it’s excellent for search and rescue, which may have helped inspire the Quirk’s name. Many people can be tracked at once with Search, so the user can keep tabs on an entire team or group of people if need be. In Season 3’s events, meanwhile, All For One stole Search from Ragdoll, a process that left her traumatized.

That experience left Ragdoll Quirkless, and it clearly disoriented and exhausted her to have Search removed from her against her will. What is more, the loss of her Quirk not only rendered Ragdoll unable to do her job as a pro hero, but it also upset her greatly, dampening her normally cheerful, carefree persona. It took time for Ragdoll to accept what happened and resume her usual good cheer as a civilian. Elsewhere, in All For One’s hands, Search was used so the symbol of evil could confirm that the pro heroes were far away from Yuga Aoyama’s meeting place, only for the pro heroes to fool All For One by teleporting to the battlefield with Warp Gate, proving that Search can be foiled with Quirk trickery.

My Hero Academia: All For One’s Most Powerful Quirks, Explained

Most characters in the world of My Hero Academia are born with a single Quirk, but All For One is an entirely different matter with his own Quirk of the same name. He was born into the early era of Quirks, back when few people understood or appreciated these supernatural gifts, and All For One made the most of that confusing era. He had the ability to transfer Quirks between people, including himself, and no one in his era could stop him from abusing his remarkable ability.

Over many decades, All For One amassed an incredible number of stolen Quirks to use. It’s impressive not just that he has so many Quirks, but that his body can withstand the strain of having so many superpowers at once, making him a one-man army who has defeated a succession of One For All users. This is a perfect time for My Hero Academia fans to review this All For One’s best Quirks as he prepares to finish the fight against the pro heroes in the anime’s upcoming 8th season.

Rivet Stab was one of the first offensive Quirks that All For One was ever seen using in the anime, and it’s one of many Quirks that Tomura Shigaraki also used with his own version of the All For One Quirk. Rivet Stab forms a number of thick, dark tendrils from the user’s fingers or spine, all with veins of glowing red energy in them, and those tendrils may impale a target to deal serious piercing damage. It is unclear if the tendrils can be used in other ways, such as forming a defensive web with them or sweeping them across the battlefield like a club.

Rivet Stab’s tendrils are durable, but they can be shattered if someone strikes them with enough force, as Deku once did with the power of One For All. Also, Rivet Stab can be used in non-harmful ways if the wielder intends to, such as when All For One harmlessly impaled Magne with it to channel the Quirk that forces someone’s own Quirk to activate.

As manga readers have already seen, Spearlike Bones actually has a special place in All For One’s Quirk collection, even if he doesn’t necessarily feel sentimental about it. This is the oldest Quirk ever seen in the series, with it belonging to All For One’s own mother, who manifested that Quirk about one year before the glowing newborn in China marked the beginning of the Quirk era. Spearlike Bones is aptly named, allowing the user to grow conical, sharp spears of bone from anywhere on their body, even from their mouth if desired.

All For One stole that Quirk from his mother, eventually gave it to a man who wanted a new Quirk, then took back Spearlike Bones at some point. All For One was seen using this ability on his Quirk-enhanced right arm while fighting his nemesis All Might in Kamino Ward, and he manifested it in the anime’s 7th season as he obtained his younger form.

Mr. Uraraka and His Wife Worked Themselves to the Bone For Ochaco

Not much has been seen of Ochaco Uraraka’s parents in the My Hero Academia anime, and fans know rather little about them. Not even their names are known, but fans know that Ochaco’s parents are wonderful people who sacrificed everything for their only child. Ochaco is ready to return the favor in full by sending her parents money after she earns paychecks as a Pro Hero.

Ochaco’s parents worked hard as construction workers, though they couldn’t always find enough gigs to support the family, leading to chronic poverty. Despite that, Mr. Uraraka and his wife kept their daughter happy with kind words of encouragement, pushing her to become someone wonderful and not define herself by what their family doesn’t have. Fans saw that for themselves in a flashback sequence early in Season 2.

The best father figure in all of My Hero Academia may not appear often, but fans who remember him will agree that David Shield is the best dad in the entire anime, biological or not. He is a brilliant American scientist and a loyal ally of All Might’s, and he would even drive All Might around in his fancy red car when the symbol of peace was fighting villains in the States.

Most importantly, David Shield is a loving and supporting parent for his daughter, Melissa, who took after him. Although born Quirkless, Melissa is confident that she can make a big difference in the hero world with her inventions, and her father David supports that endeavor 100%. He is proud of what his daughter has, not what she lacks, and that is a wise and caring stance for any parent in a world where Quirks mean everything.

Sir Nighteye Served as a Stern Yet Caring Parent For His Interns

In many ways, the suit-wearing pro hero Sir Nighteye is the same kind of unofficial father figure that Shota Aizawa is, and not just because they are both pro heroes with something to teach. Sir Nighteye is a middle-aged man and a smart, practical pro hero who wishes to follow protocol and get the job done no matter what, which is a great way to run any pro hero agency.

That made Sir Nighteye a strict but good-hearted father figure and mentor for Bubble Girl, Mirio Togata, and eventually Deku as well. Sir Nighteye showed his kinder, warmer side on his deathbed, sharing inspiring words to his friends and allies while they wept for his impending demise. Overall, fans might call Sir Nighteye an emotionally distant but well-meaning parental figure who wants his “children” to impress him before showing how much he loves them.

The symbol of peace himself, All Might, has been nicknamed “Dad Might” thanks to his parental role in Deku’s life. Izuku Midoriya’s real father has never appeared, so when Deku and All Might became allies, All Might filled in as Deku’s unofficial foster father. All Might also made it wonderfully clear how proud he was of Deku, and did everything he could to emotionally support the boy.

All Might’s methods as a coach and foster father figure were imperfect because of his inexperience in those fields, but as a heartfelt hero, he tried his best the whole time, for which Deku is grateful. By now, All Might is less of a parental figure than ever for Deku, but he has still done much to mold Deku as a brave, idealistic, and powerful symbol of peace who will save the world from villainy.

Endeavor Pushed His Children Too Hard to Become His Ultimate Heirs

Endeavor’s entire character arc is centered around his fatherhood. He entered a controversial Quirk marriage, making sure he married a woman with an ice Quirk, so his children would have the perfect balance of heat and cold with their own Quirks. Endeavor thus saw his sons and daughter not as valued family members, but as tools to be molded into heroes who might surpass All Might.

That led to disaster for the Todorokis, mentally and sometimes physically scarring them. Rei, Shoto, and Toya all suffered the worst of it, and only recently has Endeavor come to sincerely regret it all. He truly wishes to atone for what he did, but it’s left to fans’ interpretation whether the new #1 Pro Hero deserves another chance as a twisted pro hero and family man.

Not much was seen of Kotaro Shimura in My Hero Academia, but fans still saw enough to determine that he was not a good father by any means. He was the son of Nana Shimura, the 7th wielder of One For All, and in his boyhood, his mother abandoned him for the sake of his own safety. Kotaro took that hard, and it inspired his hatred of pro heroes.

Kotaro extended that anger to his own son, Tenko, who expressed his admiration for Pro-Heroes, including his grandmother, Nana Shimura. Kotaro never failed to hit and berate his son for admiring heroes, venting his frustration about his own broken family to his son, and Tenko never deserved that. In fact, that was why Tenko actually wanted to kill his father with his newly activated Decay Quirk, while the deaths of all the other Shimuras were accidents.

Every Father Figure in My Hero Academia, Ranked from Worst to Best

In a shonen anime like My Hero Academia, many of the main characters are in their teens, meaning they need parental figures to protect them, guide them, and support them as they grow up. While there are a few notable mother figures in My Hero Academia, like Inko Midoriya and Nana Shimura, the anime focuses even more on father figures, men who either supported their own children or served as a father figure to someone else.

The anime has a notable collection of father figures, biological and otherwise, who range from abusive monsters to exemplary parental figures, and everything in between. Sometimes, the characters might not consider themselves father figures first and foremost, but that is still one of their major roles in the story all the same. Some of those men wouldn’t call themselves parental figures, but for certain youths in their lives, that is absolutely what they are.

The supervillain All For One is the single worst father figure in My Hero Academia for many reasons, including the fact he’s a criminal mastermind who only ever hurts people. As for his parental role in the story, All For One was the one who adopted Tenko Shimura after that traumatized boy killed his entire family, then started reshaping Tenko into a true villain, starting with a new name.

All For One presented himself as a caring foster father to Tenko/Tomura, including giving that boy his own bedroom, but it all came with serious string attached. The symbol of evil did that, not to help a child in need, but to mold him into an heir, a process that included aggravating rather than soothing Tenko’s mental anguish. Also, while All For One sometimes spoke fondly to Tomura and praised him, he saw Tomura as a tool and living vessel, not a true son.
