Glorio’s True Colors Are Made Clear

Episode 6 really excels when it comes to the Demon Realm’s sense of scope and scale. It’s a simple detail, but the fact that “Lightning” shows that the heroes have literally been flying for an entire day helps reinforce the sheer enormity of the Demon Realm’s size and why traveling by foot isn’t possible. Goku is the centerpiece of the episode’s final act, but the majin get plenty of time to shine.

“Panzy” gave a taste of DAIMA’s new character dynamics now that Panzy is along for the ride, but “Lightning” is the first time that it really feels like everyone is working together as a team. There’s so much fun to be had as Shin, Glorio, and Panzy – three Demons from very different walks of life – get to connect and open up, while Goku plays jester until he’s needed in battle. Episode 6 isn’t afraid to occasionally push Goku to the background and have confidence in its new characters and what they bring to the table.

Dragon Ball DAIMA has deliberately been drip-feeding details about its villains. Gomah and Degesu don’t appear in “Lightning,” but the episode does provide further insight beyond what was initially revealed back in “Conspiracy.” Glorio is easily the most interesting character during these discussions as he feigns interest, but remains mum on several topics, so as not to blow any secret cover that he may need to maintain. The full context of Glorio’s connection to the villains remains unknown. Episode 6 confirms that Glorio has direct ties with Dr. Arinsu and that he’s been staying in touch with this cryptic character.

Glorio being a villain in disguise still seems too simplistic and obvious for Dragon Ball DAIMA and some sort of triple-cross situation is more believable. It’d be genuinely shocking if he’s not a hero by the time that DAIMA is over, but it’s also possible that the anime is intentionally playing into seasoned Dragon Ball fans’ expectations. If nothing else, the ominous Count Dracula-esque music that plays during Glorio’s conversation with Dr. Arinsu is fantastic. Oh, and apparently, Glind grow from trees like Cabbage Patch Kids, which is a wild visual that’s even a little reminiscent of Frieza’s tethered containment in Hell.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 6 Features Goku’s First Big Fight & It’s Already A Classic

Dragon Ball DAIMA has been a genuine delight as each new episode confidently builds upon its predecessors, adding more fuel to this demonic fire. DAIMA’s first five episodes all featured contrasting degrees of setup, the likes of which felt like an extended prologue. Make no mistake, these first five episodes are great, but Episode 6 suddenly feels like DAIMA is ready to take off the training wheels – or weighted clothing – and get into the real meat of this story.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 6, “Lightning,” is the anime’s biggest and best episode yet. Goku, Shin, Glorio, and Panzy don’t make that much progress, but there’s such a greater sense of camaraderie and development that points to a very promising future for Dragon Ball DAIMA. The Tamagami and Supreme Demon King Gomah have no idea what they’re up against.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 6, “Lightning,” begins in freefall as the team’s newly-acquired ship immediately experiences engine trouble from Panzy’s overstocked supplies. DAIMA understands that an entire episode of ship failure and finding yet another means of transportation would be a false step in the narrative. Thankfully, this problem amounts to a minor hiccup that’s really just an excuse to show off character skills and throw in some greater Gendarmerie lore. The heroes are back in the air after only a few minutes, which creates a creative opportunity for exposition and character development. This complication may have felt frustrating in the previous episode’s finale, but it’s turned into a smart asset in Episode 6.

Panzy’s enthusiasm is so much fun and she really brings a lot to DAIMA. Goku’s oblivious actions often defuse Glorio and Shin’s more reserved demeanors, yet Panzy is even more valuable in this regard. It also doesn’t hurt that Fairouz Ai is absolutely killing it in the role and her playful performance adds so much to Panzy. There’s also a little more context provided on the Magic Collars, which are an oppressive custom of the Third Demon World. Panzy may be King Kadan’s daughter and part of Demon Realm royalty, but even she isn’t immune to such treatment.

On the topic of ship trouble, “Lightning” finally catches up with Vegeta, Piccolo, and the rest of Earth’s heroes as they prepare for their Demon Realm adventure. This really doesn’t amount to much and leaves the heroes back where they started. That being said, it’s pretty funny that this episode goes out on the same cliffhanger as the previous episode. Apparently, engine trouble is the greatest evil of all in Dragon Ball DAIMA. Nevertheless, it’s nice to get any material with the Earth crew, even if it’s just a reminder that they still exist. This obstacle will likely be solved by Hybis’ arrival, which hopefully won’t take another six episodes to happen.

Each Hero Can Take On Their Own Tamagami

Dragon Ball DAIMA is only a few episodes in at this point, but it’s already set the stage for some thrilling battles against the Demon Realm’s most powerful forces. There’s been a lot of focus on the three Tamagami — dangerous knight-like guardians — who were created by Neva to protect the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls. It’s not hard to picture Goku taking on each of the Tamagamis and defeating them one-by-one. There’s still plenty of value in this idea. However, it doesn’t seem to be a coincidence that there are three Tamagami and three central heroes — Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo — who have traveled to the Demon Realm. Immediately, the prospect of perfunctory Tamagami battles become more interesting if there’s a possibility that each one will be faced by a different hero. Vegeta and Piccolo are just as resilient as Goku and, while they possess comparable levels of strength, they all carry very diverse abilities. It’s more creative and suspenseful to divide the heroes for their Tamagami battles to better push them out of their comfort zones. Not only would each Tamagami battle feel different with this formula, but it also means that Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo can’t just pool together their talent and overwhelm the enemy. It’s exciting to have different heroes at the center of each of these big fights, but it also forces them all to do the heavy lifting on their own.

This structure also opens the possibility of these characters stumbling upon new techniques or transformations. There have been rumors that Vegeta actually ascends to Super Saiyan 3 status in Dragon Ball DAIMA. A milestone of this nature is only possible if he needs to fight on his own and give everything he has on the battlefield. New powers for Vegeta, Piccolo, or even Shin aren’t possible with a single team where Goku leads the charge. Beyond the Tamagami, there are also actual Demons to handle between Gomah, Degesu, Neva, and Dr. Arinsu. There’s the possibility that the heroes engage in group battles against these threats. However, a likelier alternative would be for the heroes to divide and conquer against their dark halves. Piccolo fights Neva, Shin faces Degesu, and Goku and Vegeta both take on Gomah. These are all more exciting scenarios that actually take advantage of the heroes’ versatility and justify the villains who have been assembled for this story.

Two Teams Is A Better Way To Cover More Ground In A Completely New Realm

Dragon Ball DAIMA has only just begun and its exploration and showcase of the Demon Realm has only been minimal at this point. However, Dragon Ball DAIMA’s opening and closing credits give a vaster view of this dimension, all of which gives the impression that it’s the size of an entire universe. There seem to be separate planets and diverse flora and fauna in the Demon Realm. This implies that the Demon Realm is a solar system-like entity and not just some demonic substitute to Other World. There’s a tremendous amount to explore and experience here, and it’d likely be impossible for one team of heroes to cover all this ground. A singular team of Goku, Shin, and Glorio would be extremely limited in how much of the Demon Realm they can experience. Alternatively, they visit multiple destinations in a single episode, but with chaotic pacing that rushes through lush locations where they don’t get the attention that they deserve. Two separate teams of heroes help solve this problem, since they can be in different locations at the same time. This is the smartest way to fully take advantage of everything that the Demon Realm has to offer.

DAIMA Avoids The Same Goku-Centric Pitfalls As Dragon Ball GT

There are many similarities between Dragon Ball DAIMA and Dragon Ball GT. In fact, some of these connections are so explicit that fans initially thought that DAIMA might be Toriyama’s attempt to reboot Dragon Ball GT and hammer out a canonical version of the series that properly fits into the franchise’s universe. Kid-sized transformations and spaceship-fueled Dragon Ball quests definitely align with Dragon Ball GT. However, one of the biggest — and most understandable — criticisms against Dragon Ball GT is that dozens of strong and beloved characters are ultimately sidelined for an extended, non-stop Goku showcase. Admittedly, Dragon Ball GT isn’t the only series to shelve other valuable characters in favor of more Goku love. However, it feels the most egregious in Dragon Ball GT because it fails to follow through on everything that Dragon Ball Z’s endgame promised. There’s no excuse to essentially ignore characters like Gohan, Goten, and Buu. Uub and Vegeta get a little more love, but they still come across as afterthoughts, and they’re not allowed any individual wins. It’s smart for DAIMA to acknowledge Dragon Ball GT, but be discerning enough to not just shamelessly copy it. In doing so, DAIMA will be able to fix one of the fandom’s biggest problems with Dragon Ball GT.

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s trailers, which were largely focused on Goku, had fans genuinely concerned that the series would be another opportunity to celebrate Goku at the expense of everyone else. It would feel like a missed opportunity to introduce Mini versions of Piccolo and Vegeta, only to not do anything with them. Two separate teams means that everyone gets something to do and audiences aren’t burnt out by one character doing everything. Furthermore, DAIMA has addressed certain storylines that would be most effective if they’re explicitly explored by other characters. For instance, the news that Namekians come from the Demon Realm has the potential to put Piccolo on a soul-searching quest where he confronts his origins and the circumstances behind his father, Demon King Piccolo. Additionally, Vegeta was briefly turned into a Majin himself, which will likely trigger tension once he’s in the Demon Realm. Goku doesn’t have the same relationship with these ideas, and they’d be less moving if he were the one who navigates through them. Dragon Ball DAIMA’s decision to embrace two separate teams of heroes opens the anime up to the most rewarding storytelling, action, adventure, and character development opportunities.

However, a wider point of view makes it easier to show some love to the rest of Dragon Ball’s cast. Dragon Ball’s opening and closing credits have teased characters like Mr. Satan Mini and Buu Mini. It’d be disappointing if they were only featured for a brief sight gag without being given more to do. Akira Toriyama’s evergreen shonen series, Dragon Ball, is in the middle of an exciting and rejuvenating new period thanks to Dragon Ball DAIMA, a new anime. However, the heroes get a bit of a break when a rogue Demon named Glorio shows up to ask for Goku’s help. Goku heads off to the Demon Realm, alongside Glorio and Shin, which could have easily put an end to everyone else’s stories. Fortunately, Bulma declares that she’ll continue to work on fixing Shin’s ship and that Vegeta, Piccolo, and presumably Kibito, will catch up with them. This may seem like an innocuous detail, but Dragon Ball DAIMA’s decision to split up the heroes into two separate teams could be a crucial ingredient to the new series’ success.
