Separating the Main Cast Into Two Teams Could End Up Dragon Ball DAIMA’s Best Decision

Akira Toriyama’s evergreen shonen series, Dragon Ball, is in the middle of an exciting and rejuvenating new period thanks to Dragon Ball DAIMA, a new anime. Dragon Ball DAIMA is set between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super’s events and tells a bold story that beautifully expands upon the franchise’s universe. Supreme Demon King Gomah hatches a scheme to get revenge on Goku and company for their role in Dabura’s defeat. Gomah makes a Dragon Ball wish that transforms everyone into seemingly helpless children — first-graders, to be exact — before they return to the Demon Realm with a baby Dende in tow. The heroes are eager to reverse this curse, but these specific circumstances mean that they’ll have to head to the mysterious Demon Realm and take on its many threats.

Bulma tirelessly works on Shin’s spaceship in order to get it in working shape to travel to this devious destination. However, the heroes get a bit of a break when a rogue Demon named Glorio shows up to ask for Goku’s help. Goku heads off to the Demon Realm, alongside Glorio and Shin, which could have easily put an end to everyone else’s stories. Fortunately, Bulma declares that she’ll continue to work on fixing Shin’s ship and that Vegeta, Piccolo, and presumably Kibito, will catch up with them. This may seem like an innocuous detail, but Dragon Ball DAIMA’s decision to split up the heroes into two separate teams could be a crucial ingredient to the new series’ success.

Two Teams Is A Better Way To Cover More Ground In A Completely New Realm

Dragon Ball DAIMA has only just begun and its exploration and showcase of the Demon Realm has only been minimal at this point. However, Dragon Ball DAIMA’s opening and closing credits give a vaster view of this dimension, all of which gives the impression that it’s the size of an entire universe. There seem to be separate planets and diverse flora and fauna in the Demon Realm. This implies that the Demon Realm is a solar system-like entity and not just some demonic substitute to Other World. There’s a tremendous amount to explore and experience here, and it’d likely be impossible for one team of heroes to cover all this ground. A singular team of Goku, Shin, and Glorio would be extremely limited in how much of the Demon Realm they can experience. Alternatively, they visit multiple destinations in a single episode, but with chaotic pacing that rushes through lush locations where they don’t get the attention that they deserve. Two separate teams of heroes help solve this problem, since they can be in different locations at the same time. This is the smartest way to fully take advantage of everything that the Demon Realm has to offer.

Additionally, two hero teams mean that they can tackle different goals without one task impeding the other. Goku is eager to rescue Dende, while Vegeta and Piccolo are eager to be turned back to normal. These contrasting goals can be tackled at the same time if there’s more than one team in play, rather than Goku needing to disregard Dende, or the Dragon Balls, depending on what he chooses to tackle. Dragon Ball Z adopted a similar approach when the heroes headed to Planet Namek to retrieve the planet’s Dragon Balls. There were multiple teams in motion here – Vegeta, then Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma, then Goku’s fated arrival, followed by Piccolo’s resurrection – all of which arrived on Namek at different times. This structure helped the characters take on unique tasks and experience different Namekian locations.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 4 Power Ranking

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s fourth episode, “Chatty,” continues to follow Goku, Glorio, and Shin as they travel through Demon Realm. It introduces a new mission for Goku, Gomah’s loathsome henchmen make their presence known, and the newest addition to Dragon Ball’s main cast makes her first appearance. Toss in the biggest battle the anime has seen yet, and the balance of power has definitely shifted once again.

Goku, Glorio, and Panzy show their strength as more of Demon Realm is explored in Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 4. Together and apart, they fight monsters, violent demons, and the Gendarmerie is one gorgeously animated sequence after another. The Z-Warriors also encounter a kind married couple who, among other things, grant them the power to perform Fusion.

The Demon Shopkeepers Sell Goku the Ability to Fuse

After their plane is stolen, Goku and his friends are lucky to find a pair of kind demon shopkeepers. Along with being hilarious characters who add to the anime’s delightful charm, they’re extraordinarily helpful to the Z-Warriors. Not only are they able to provide the heroes with a new mode of transportation, but some very curious bugs.

Gross as the idea of eating bugs seems to Shin and Glorio, they’ll inevitably be happy about Goku’s purchases. In place of Senzu Beans, Goku is now stocked up on Revive Bugs, which serve the same purpose, and heal those who eat them. Goku also buys Join Bugs, the anime’s newest method of performing fusion, meaning fans may be in store for a new fusion of Goku and Vegeta, or possibly Goku and Glorio.

Goku’s Limited Mobility is Key to DAIMA’s Outstanding Fights

Goku has so far spent two episodes of Dragon Ball DAIMA in the Demon Realm, and both have already more than justified the decision to ground Goku. Besides the fact that the anime has returned to an episodic adventure for the first time since the Pilaf Saga, the fights are the best the series has seen in years. This can be attributed in large part to Goku’s lack of flight, and his reversion to his old style of combat.

Episodes 3 and 4 of DAIMA both feature a climactic fight in their final minutes. In the former, Goku battles a group of thuggish demons in a bar brawl. In the latter, Goku mops the floor with a squad of Gomah’s personal police force, the Gendarmerie. Both of these fights have more in common with Goku’s fights from the original Dragon Ball than they do the fights in DBZand both of them take full advantage of Goku’s inability to fly.

Goku’s battles in the Demon Realm so far center around the young Saiyan’s swift movements, and his use of his environment. He may not be able to fly or move at speeds faster than light, but he’s still a remarkably swift martial artist. Watching him dash and flip across a bar or leap around a village with exuberant joy is far more satisfying than seeing him fly while focused on only his opponent, and not his surroundings. Goku’s usage of plates as shields in the bar fight, and the way he implements strategies related to putting distance between himself and the Gendarmerie are creative and engaging, and they never could have been executed in the sky.

Dragon Ball DAIMA has made one genius move after another in constructing its story. The explanations why Goku’s ability to fly while in the Demon Realm is limited, and why he can’t use Instant Transmission at all are perfectly understandable and logical. By ripping the freedom to fight and move however he pleases from Goku, fans get to finally enjoy an adventure with him again, and his fights are unlike anything they’ve seen in decades.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Came Up With a Perfect Way to Keep the Story Grounded

The way action is presented in Dragon Ball has changed massively over the anime’s lifetime. Fights in the early arcs are largely based around gags, with only the most important clashes focusing on traditional martial arts, while battles in Dragon Ball Z feature combatants flying around the sky launching increasingly powerful ki blasts at each other. While most fans focus on the ki blasts when examining how combat in the series changes overtime, flight is an even more important factor.

Flight, as well as Instant Transmission, give Goku complete freedom to move wherever he needs to in battle, and to travel anywhere outside of it. With the iconic hero having these abilities, his fighting style is completely different from when he was a kid, and viewers are unable to spend time with him on any long quests from one destination to another. For the first time in many years, Dragon Ball DAIMA limits Goku’s mobility, keeping him as grounded as the anime itself.

Flight and Instant Transmission Are Key Tools in Goku’s Arsenal

Goku has had a method of flying since the franchise’s earliest days. At the beginning of the original Dragon Ball, none of the human characters can fly on their own, but Goku is able to get around on the Flying Nimbus. A small flying cloud given to Goku by Master Roshi as thanks for him helping Turtle, the Nimbus is a mode of transportation that can only be ridden by pure-of-heart individuals. In the three non-tournament arcs in the original series, this forces Goku into situations during his adventures where flying isn’t an option. Most battles being flightless helps to emphasize strategy and traditional martial arts, and Goku’s lack of ability to fly on his own is repeatedly used as a source of drama, such as in his first clash with Tambourine.

The idea of humans being able to fly purely by manipulating their own ki is first presented in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament Arc. As an extension of the two being students of the Crane School, Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu are practitioners of the Sky Dancing technique, something that gives them a massive advantage in their respective fights against Goku and Krillin. It isn’t until half-way through the Saiyan Saga in Dragon Ball Z that flying becomes a standard skill known by nearly every Z-Warrior. From that point onward, fights in Dragon Ball completely change, and the series ceases to be an adventure anime.

Fights in Dragon Ball Z are unquestionably some of the best in the Shōnen genre. In most cases, however, this comes down to their spectacle, the character drama weaved into the battles, and/or their animation quality. The actual choreography, meanwhile, pales in comparison to Dragon Ball’s fights. Even leaving aside DBZ’s prioritizing of ki blasts over hand-to-hand combat, there’s little strategy that can be implemented into the fights when the combatants are zipping around the sky as near light-speed.

More so than its effects on fights, the standardization of flight changed the types of stories Dragon Ball was capable of telling. The Pilaf Saga, The Red Ribbon Army Saga, and the King Piccolo Saga are only able to work the way they do because of the limitations placed on Goku and his friends. The episodic structure of the Pilaf Saga, which sees the characters slowly traveling from one interesting location to the next, only functions because Yamcha and Bulma can’t fly, and need to rely on their vehicles. The Red Ribbon Army Saga involves Goku traveling around the world on his Nimbus, but this forces him to primarily travel alone, leading him to meet and work with a variety of new characters. In these instances, there especially wouldn’t have been any tension if Goku had access to Instant Transmission, the power he gains in the Cell Saga that lets him teleport anywhere in the universe in an instant.

Why A Historical Dragon Ball Piece Would Work

While these two segments are short, they prove that a Sengoku-period Dragon Ball series would be a fantastic way to carry the franchise forward after Dragon Ball DAIMA concludes. One thing fans will notice when they watch these segments is how Dragon Ball’s visual style and character designs naturally fit the aesthetic of the Sengoku period. Even when clad in historical costume, each Dragon Ball character remains instantly recognizable, but at the same time, they don’t clash with the backdrop or the setting as a whole. This is especially true of Vegeta, Master Roshi, and Mr. Satan, as they look so natural in their outfits that it’s easy to imagine them wearing them during regular Dragon Ball arcs without them seeming out of place.

Plus, Dragon Ball’s usual plot structure fits a Sengoku-inspired warring states narrative. At their core, most Dragon Ball arcs are about one faction invading territory owned by someone else to take it over and steal its resources. For example, Dragon Ball’s Red Ribbon Army Saga sees Goku battle a group that is occupying towns and villages so they can collect the Dragon Balls and take over the world. Later, Dragon Ball Z’s Vegeta Saga sees the space-faring Saiyans invading Earth to once again steal the Dragon Balls and take over the planet.

Even Dragon Ball Super plays into this, as the Universe Survival Saga’s Tournament Of Power is basically a fighting tournament version of a Sengoku period narrative, with entire universes fighting each other to be the last universe standing, no matter the cost. So, all a hypothetical writer needs to do is split the various characters into defined armies before dropping them in a world divided into regions or countries and give each army a reason to invade and take territory from the others.

A Sengoku-inspired installment would also allow a future series to build on the formula that has made Dragon Ball DAIMA so successful, as it would drop Goku and his friends into a new, visually distinct world that would push them outside their comfort zones and force them to utilize different tactics and strategies to get what they want, as the setting would remove most of the technology Goku has come to rely on in his modern adventures.

Plus, much like Dragon Ball DAIMA’s Demon World, a historical setting would open the door for a slew of new and unique characters as well as many interesting new setpieces. Because of this, a historical series would be able to retain Dragon Ball’s distinctive core and trademark fight scenes while also feeling different enough to make it stand out and not feel like a rehash of the many Dragon Ball stories that have come before it.

However, it shouldn’t be surprising that Dragon Ball and the Sengoku period go together so well. Dragon Ball is heavily inspired by the Chinese novel Journey to the West. Toriyama even admitted that the original Dragon Ball characters are direct copies of Journey To The West‘s cast, telling an interviewer that:

The Journey To The West novel was first published in the 16th century (though oral versions of many of the tales predate publication). This means Wu Cheng’en was writing Journey to the West as Japan went through the Sengoku period. Because of this shared era and Japan and China’s geographic closeness, several elements from the story, including fashion, technology, and the general way of life can easily be used as a basis for fiction set in this era of Japan’s history without it feeling painfully out of place or anachronistic, especially if the new work has magical elements.

A Forgotten Special Shows That After DAIMA’s Demon Realm Goku Needs To Go Back In Time

Dragon Ball telah menjadi salah satu serial anime legendaris yang tak hanya dikenal di Jepang, tetapi di seluruh dunia

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s first three episodes have wowed fans and critics alike, with many people praising the series for taking Dragon Ball back to its roots by reintroducing the comedic and fantasy-influenced elements that vanished from the franchise in its later years. It has also shown that taking Goku and his friends out of their comfort zones and dropping them in a new location can have great results. Because of this, if the writers are stuck for ideas after Goku’s Demon Realm adventure, they should take inspiration from an overlooked Dragon Ball TV special and send Goku back in time for his next major adventure.

In 1987, the Japanese television network Fuji TV ran a special extended broadcast to celebrate its 30th year on the air. This broadcast did so well that it would become a tradition, with the station producing a new special broadcast each year at around the same time. In 1997, this annual tradition was renamed FNS 27, reflecting that broadcasts were usually between 25 and 27 hours long. Each year, hundreds of Japanese comedians, musicians, and media figures come together to create unique content for the special, all based on a central theme that changes each year.

The History Of FNS 27-Jikan TV Nihon no Rekishi

A Japanese Television Tradition That Rarely Gets Mentioned Outside Of Japan

  • KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops
  • Chibi Maruko-chan
  • Dragon Ball Super
  • One Piece

Dragon Ball Super (which was airing on Fuji TV) was featured in three of the special’s segments. The first segment was a brief section where Goku was seen interacting with a dinosaur for a few moments. The second section focused on Prehistory. It starts with Gohan reading a history book about the Ice Age and the formation of the Japanese archipelago out loud to himself. Once he’s finished, the scene cuts to Goku standing in a grassy area admiring an elephant. Whis approaches Goku and informs him that the beast is actually a Naumann’s Elephant. An extinct elephant species that lived on the Japanese archipelago in the Middle to Late Pleistocene period.

Not understanding that Whis’ comment about its strength isn’t an invitation to fight it, Goku rushes across the plain and encounters an early human who resembles Yajirobe. Gohan then explains how early man moved on to create tools before starting to build villages, towns, and other settlements. This segment ends by discussing Himiko (played by Bulma), the shamaness who united several warring tribes under her leadership to form the ancient country of Yamatai-koku during the Yayoi period.

The next Dragon Ball segment starts with Whis and Goku flying through the sky as Whis explains the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568 to 1600), the final phase of the Sengoku period. However, Whis is so wrapped up in his lecture that he accidentally drops his time scroll. Goku quickly dashes back and grabs the scroll, which Whis then uses to show Goku (and the audience) a vision of the era.

In this vision, Vegeta takes the role of Oda Nobunaga, who is on a mission to unite Japan under his own banner. However, this goes wrong when Akechi Mitsuhide (played by Frieza) betrays him, leading to his death. Whis continues by saying that Toyotomi Hideyoshi (played by Master Roshi) continued Nobunaga’s campaign and eventually succeeded where Nobunaga had failed. Alas, when Hideyoshi dies, conflict erupts again, leading to Ishida Mitsunari (played by Mr Satan) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (portrayed by Korin) doing battle. At this point, the segment ends with Whis closing the Time Scroll, marking the end of Dragon Ball’s involvement in the show.

Vegeta, Piccolo, and Bulma Have Larger Roles in the Series Than Anyone Expected

Based on promotional material and trailers, it seemed like the only main characters of DAIMA were going to be Goku, Shin, Glorio, and Panzy. However, DAIMA’s second episode, as well as the series opening and ending credits, have revealed this to not be the case. Rather, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Bulma are all main characters in Dragon Ball DAIMA. While making a Dragon Ball series without any popular characters (besides Goku) in leading roles would have been bold, there’s been clear fan excitement that this isn’t the reality of DAIMA.

Vegeta has been Goku’s co-star since the final act of the Buu Saga, Piccolo recently returned to the spotlight in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and, with DAIMA paying tribute to the original anime, it would have felt wrong for Bulma, the franchise’s leading lady, to not have a major role. And, although they aren’t going to Demon Realm just yet, with the three needing to wait 8 days for Bulma to finish repairing their new spaceship, they all have potentially unique roles in the story ahead of them.

Vegeta will not be playing his usual role as Goku’s foil in DAIMA, as that role will seemingly be played by Glorio. This opens up room for his underdeveloped relationship with Piccolo, and his beloved romance with Bulma to get more screentime, and him not having to be held in comparison to Goku may mean his fans will get to see him win more fights than usual. Piccolo, meanwhile, will be the main hero dealing with Neva, and his presence in the story will help fans gain a better understanding of Namek’s connection to Demon Realm. And Bulma will be fulfilling her traditional role from the original Dragon Ball as the team’s assertive genius. As indicated by the opening and ending credits, she’ll also evidently be striking up a friendship or rivalry with the also technical and handy Panzy.

Dragon Ball DAIMA continues to be a breath of fresh air for the franchise. With its charm, humor, and focus on adventure, it’s the perfect way to honor 40 years of Dragon Ball, and the legacy of Akira Toriyama. Things are still just getting started though, and they’re only going to get more exciting.

Do Namekians Need to Bathe & Brush Their Teeth?

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s first episode was one of the most stunning moments in Dragon Ball history, as within a mere thirty minutes, the show transformed what fans know about the Dragon Ball universe, introducing several new concepts and redefining what fans know about several fan-favorite characters. Nowhere is this better seen than with the humble Namekians. Not only did DAIMA retcon their origin story and re-introduce the demonic elements first seen in the original Dragon Ball, but the episode also drops some fascinating facts about Piccolo and his brethren. One of these tidbits sparked major fan debate, leading to many Dragon Ball fans asking if Namekians need to shower or brush their teeth.

This debate was sparked by a moment in the middle of the episode. After King Gomah decides to head to the human world and collect its Dragon Balls, he fetches Neva the Namekian, noting that, while the man is a “little senile,” he knows everything about the Dragon Balls. The next scene starts with King Gomah, Degesu, and Neva climbing into the tiny-pod-like ship that will carry them from the Demon Realm to the mortal world.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Suggests Interesting Things About Namekian Biology

Neva’s Horrible Odor Suggests Weird Things About The Namekians

After reaching the pod, Neva climbs into the back seat, forcing Gomah against the wall. As this happens, Gomah sniffs the air and reacts with disgust, asking Neva, “When was the last time you took a shower?” Neva quickly replies by saying:

“A shower? I think I took one years ago when I fell in the mud.”

This gets more confusing when, a few minutes later, Neva asks Gomah to turn the ship around because he “forgot his toothbrush,” suggesting that despite his smell, Neva does have some semblance of personal hygiene.

This sequence has led to fans questioning if Namekians need to shower or brush their teeth or if they skip washing entirely. It’s easy to see why this debate flared up as Namekians have been shown to have unique biology, even if the exact nature of this biology has changed several times over Dragon Balls’ runOne of the most famous quirks of Namekian biology is that their body contains enzymes that allow them to break down water and turn it into nutrients (something confirmed by the Dragon Ball: Super Exciting Guide), meaning that a Namekian can survive off water alone. However, it has been shown that, while they don’t need it, Namekians can eat and digest solid food and suffer no ill effects, as seen in Dragon Ball’s 126th episode, “Eternal Dragon Resurrected,” where Piccolo catches and eats a fish (though it should be noted that Piccolo seemingly stopped eating solid food and returned to an all-water diet at some point during the story, as shown by him not having food at Trunks’ party).

On top of this, Namekians have been shown to have tougher than usual skin, as demonstrated by their immense durability and resistance to cold temperatures, as both the nameless Namekian and Piccolo have been shown living and training in Arctic conditions without suffering any ill effects and without needing to wear insulated clothing. Namekians can also regenerate their bodies, allowing them to heal their wounds and, provided they have the energy, regrow lost limbs.

Everything You Need To Know About Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World

Dragon Ball was initially created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. Since its inception, the manga has morphed into a series of anime, western-style comics, video games, mobile games, and board games. The franchise has grown and evolved, bringing with it new formats and thus alternative audiences. Among the expansions was a trading card game, initially debuting in the late 2000s. That first design came about during an era of innovation, where major brands were looking to the tabletop industry for inspiration.

With other series like the Pokémon Trading Card Game doing exceptionally well, there was a belief that Dragon Ball would also be able to translate to the same success. However, it would be short-lived, with the market simply not there for that kind of debut. It would take some time for the industry to grow enough to warrant a new iteration of a Dragon Ball TCG. What’s more, the franchise itself needed to form an even larger audience, with the advent of global streaming services allowing it to become far more viable. So, after years without a TCG, a new one emerged.

A New Way For Dragon Ball Fans To Experience a TCG

Digital Elements Upgrade the Game

2017 marked the launch of the Dragon Ball Super Trading Card Game, a format that would go through a couple of iterations in its own right. Regardless of its form, this was a title that launched at the perfect time. The tabletop world was going through a new period of rapid growth with a mainstream audience suddenly invested. The pandemic era boosted that market and with the popularity of Dragon Ball still very present, the Dragon Ball Super Trading Card Game benefited massively.

With a unique array of rules and a gorgeous set of cards to utilize, this became a must-play experience and one that often topped the TCG charts. It was only a matter of time until the title took another step forward, especially with so many of its competitors embracing new technology and moving towards ever-changing audience expectations. So, in 2024, the Dragon Ball Super Trading Card Game Fusion World incarnation was born, with all of its perks and new concepts. This iteration of the title has been designed to carry the company into the future, with Bandai Namco setting the stage for a title that has the unique ability to change with the times.

The first thing that fans need to know about the Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World edition is that, in its most basic form, it resembles a classic trading card game. There are still starter sets and booster packs, and those familiar with past iterations or with the competition will not feel too out of their depth with this game. The title does represent a new era for Dragon Ball in the TCG format though, and that means that a whole range of different cards are available, and fans will likely be looking to start their collections again based on upcoming releases.

That isn’t to say that previous cards should be thrown out though. In fact, Bandai Namco does not wish to alienate long-term fans and has made sure that there’s some sense of continuity between the games. Therefore, the rules remain the same, but the developers have promised that this is a more intuitive way to play, with fantastic additional combos and the opportunity to create battle strategies that take advantage of a stacked deck. For those that enjoy the aesthetic of the game, they should not fret, as the title will also be using the same artistic stylings, to maintain that sense of connection to the past.

  • The original Dragon Ball Trading Card Game ran from 2008 to 2009.
  • A new series debuted in 2017, bringing together Dragon BallDragon Ball ZDragon Ball GTDragon Ball Super and Super Dragon Ball Heroes.
  • 2024 marks the debut of Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World, a new take on the series.

The biggest headline concerning Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World is that there is now a digital edition available. Much like The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is taking the classic title onto mobile, Dragon Ball is also making that online shift with the option to play on PC. There are many benefits to this besides the crisp animations that come along with the game. For starters, this platform opens up players to global competition, allowing them to go against friends and strangers alike in a battle for the title of best.

But the game also promises a fusion between both the digital and physical realms, with multiple points of connection. Any card that is dropped within the physical world will be added to the digital game too. The rules will remain the same no matter where people are playing from, and the available cards will also be consistent with the same artwork. Players will be able to seamlessly move from one platform to the other. The digital space is not supposed to be a replacement for the real-world game, but rather an alternative avenue to enjoy the concept through. Ranked, Room, Free and Solo setups populate the digital version.
