A Forgotten Special Shows That After DAIMA’s Demon Realm Goku Needs To Go Back In Time

Dragon Ball telah menjadi salah satu serial anime legendaris yang tak hanya dikenal di Jepang, tetapi di seluruh dunia

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s first three episodes have wowed fans and critics alike, with many people praising the series for taking Dragon Ball back to its roots by reintroducing the comedic and fantasy-influenced elements that vanished from the franchise in its later years. It has also shown that taking Goku and his friends out of their comfort zones and dropping them in a new location can have great results. Because of this, if the writers are stuck for ideas after Goku’s Demon Realm adventure, they should take inspiration from an overlooked Dragon Ball TV special and send Goku back in time for his next major adventure.

In 1987, the Japanese television network Fuji TV ran a special extended broadcast to celebrate its 30th year on the air. This broadcast did so well that it would become a tradition, with the station producing a new special broadcast each year at around the same time. In 1997, this annual tradition was renamed FNS 27, reflecting that broadcasts were usually between 25 and 27 hours long. Each year, hundreds of Japanese comedians, musicians, and media figures come together to create unique content for the special, all based on a central theme that changes each year.

A Japanese Television Tradition That Rarely Gets Mentioned Outside Of Japan

  • Chibi Maruko-chan
  • Dragon Ball Super
  • One Piece

Dragon Ball Super (which was airing on Fuji TV) was featured in three of the special’s segments. The first segment was a brief section where Goku was seen interacting with a dinosaur for a few moments. The second section focused on Prehistory. It starts with Gohan reading a history book about the Ice Age and the formation of the Japanese archipelago out loud to himself. Once he’s finished, the scene cuts to Goku standing in a grassy area admiring an elephant. Whis approaches Goku and informs him that the beast is actually a Naumann’s Elephant. An extinct elephant species that lived on the Japanese archipelago in the Middle to Late Pleistocene period.

Not understanding that Whis’ comment about its strength isn’t an invitation to fight it, Goku rushes across the plain and encounters an early human who resembles Yajirobe. Gohan then explains how early man moved on to create tools before starting to build villages, towns, and other settlements. This segment ends by discussing Himiko (played by Bulma), the shamaness who united several warring tribes under her leadership to form the ancient country of Yamatai-koku during the Yayoi period.

The next Dragon Ball segment starts with Whis and Goku flying through the sky as Whis explains the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568 to 1600), the final phase of the Sengoku period. However, Whis is so wrapped up in his lecture that he accidentally drops his time scroll. Goku quickly dashes back and grabs the scroll, which Whis then uses to show Goku (and the audience) a vision of the era.

In this vision, Vegeta takes the role of Oda Nobunaga, who is on a mission to unite Japan under his own banner. However, this goes wrong when Akechi Mitsuhide (played by Frieza) betrays him, leading to his death. Whis continues by saying that Toyotomi Hideyoshi (played by Master Roshi) continued Nobunaga’s campaign and eventually succeeded where Nobunaga had failed. Alas, when Hideyoshi dies, conflict erupts again, leading to Ishida Mitsunari (played by Mr Satan) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (portrayed by Korin) doing battle. At this point, the segment ends with Whis closing the Time Scroll, marking the end of Dragon Ball’s involvement in the show.

Vegeta, Piccolo, and Bulma Have Larger Roles in the Series Than Anyone Expected

Based on promotional material and trailers, it seemed like the only main characters of DAIMA were going to be Goku, Shin, Glorio, and Panzy. However, DAIMA’s second episode, as well as the series opening and ending credits, have revealed this to not be the case. Rather, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Bulma are all main characters in Dragon Ball DAIMA. While making a Dragon Ball series without any popular characters (besides Goku) in leading roles would have been bold, there’s been clear fan excitement that this isn’t the reality of DAIMA.

Vegeta has been Goku’s co-star since the final act of the Buu Saga, Piccolo recently returned to the spotlight in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and, with DAIMA paying tribute to the original anime, it would have felt wrong for Bulma, the franchise’s leading lady, to not have a major role. And, although they aren’t going to Demon Realm just yet, with the three needing to wait 8 days for Bulma to finish repairing their new spaceship, they all have potentially unique roles in the story ahead of them.

Vegeta will not be playing his usual role as Goku’s foil in DAIMA, as that role will seemingly be played by Glorio. This opens up room for his underdeveloped relationship with Piccolo, and his beloved romance with Bulma to get more screentime, and him not having to be held in comparison to Goku may mean his fans will get to see him win more fights than usual. Piccolo, meanwhile, will be the main hero dealing with Neva, and his presence in the story will help fans gain a better understanding of Namek’s connection to Demon Realm. And Bulma will be fulfilling her traditional role from the original Dragon Ball as the team’s assertive genius. As indicated by the opening and ending credits, she’ll also evidently be striking up a friendship or rivalry with the also technical and handy Panzy.

Dragon Ball DAIMA continues to be a breath of fresh air for the franchise. With its charm, humor, and focus on adventure, it’s the perfect way to honor 40 years of Dragon Ball, and the legacy of Akira Toriyama. Things are still just getting started though, and they’re only going to get more exciting.

Do Namekians Need to Bathe & Brush Their Teeth?

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s first episode was one of the most stunning moments in Dragon Ball history, as within a mere thirty minutes, the show transformed what fans know about the Dragon Ball universe, introducing several new concepts and redefining what fans know about several fan-favorite characters. Nowhere is this better seen than with the humble Namekians. Not only did DAIMA retcon their origin story and re-introduce the demonic elements first seen in the original Dragon Ball, but the episode also drops some fascinating facts about Piccolo and his brethren. One of these tidbits sparked major fan debate, leading to many Dragon Ball fans asking if Namekians need to shower or brush their teeth.

This debate was sparked by a moment in the middle of the episode. After King Gomah decides to head to the human world and collect its Dragon Balls, he fetches Neva the Namekian, noting that, while the man is a “little senile,” he knows everything about the Dragon Balls. The next scene starts with King Gomah, Degesu, and Neva climbing into the tiny-pod-like ship that will carry them from the Demon Realm to the mortal world.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Suggests Interesting Things About Namekian Biology

Neva’s Horrible Odor Suggests Weird Things About The Namekians

After reaching the pod, Neva climbs into the back seat, forcing Gomah against the wall. As this happens, Gomah sniffs the air and reacts with disgust, asking Neva, “When was the last time you took a shower?” Neva quickly replies by saying:

“A shower? I think I took one years ago when I fell in the mud.”

This gets more confusing when, a few minutes later, Neva asks Gomah to turn the ship around because he “forgot his toothbrush,” suggesting that despite his smell, Neva does have some semblance of personal hygiene.

This sequence has led to fans questioning if Namekians need to shower or brush their teeth or if they skip washing entirely. It’s easy to see why this debate flared up as Namekians have been shown to have unique biology, even if the exact nature of this biology has changed several times over Dragon Balls’ runOne of the most famous quirks of Namekian biology is that their body contains enzymes that allow them to break down water and turn it into nutrients (something confirmed by the Dragon Ball: Super Exciting Guide), meaning that a Namekian can survive off water alone. However, it has been shown that, while they don’t need it, Namekians can eat and digest solid food and suffer no ill effects, as seen in Dragon Ball’s 126th episode, “Eternal Dragon Resurrected,” where Piccolo catches and eats a fish (though it should be noted that Piccolo seemingly stopped eating solid food and returned to an all-water diet at some point during the story, as shown by him not having food at Trunks’ party).

On top of this, Namekians have been shown to have tougher than usual skin, as demonstrated by their immense durability and resistance to cold temperatures, as both the nameless Namekian and Piccolo have been shown living and training in Arctic conditions without suffering any ill effects and without needing to wear insulated clothing. Namekians can also regenerate their bodies, allowing them to heal their wounds and, provided they have the energy, regrow lost limbs.

Everything You Need To Know About Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World

Dragon Ball was initially created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. Since its inception, the manga has morphed into a series of anime, western-style comics, video games, mobile games, and board games. The franchise has grown and evolved, bringing with it new formats and thus alternative audiences. Among the expansions was a trading card game, initially debuting in the late 2000s. That first design came about during an era of innovation, where major brands were looking to the tabletop industry for inspiration.

With other series like the Pokémon Trading Card Game doing exceptionally well, there was a belief that Dragon Ball would also be able to translate to the same success. However, it would be short-lived, with the market simply not there for that kind of debut. It would take some time for the industry to grow enough to warrant a new iteration of a Dragon Ball TCG. What’s more, the franchise itself needed to form an even larger audience, with the advent of global streaming services allowing it to become far more viable. So, after years without a TCG, a new one emerged.

A New Way For Dragon Ball Fans To Experience a TCG

Digital Elements Upgrade the Game

2017 marked the launch of the Dragon Ball Super Trading Card Game, a format that would go through a couple of iterations in its own right. Regardless of its form, this was a title that launched at the perfect time. The tabletop world was going through a new period of rapid growth with a mainstream audience suddenly invested. The pandemic era boosted that market and with the popularity of Dragon Ball still very present, the Dragon Ball Super Trading Card Game benefited massively.

With a unique array of rules and a gorgeous set of cards to utilize, this became a must-play experience and one that often topped the TCG charts. It was only a matter of time until the title took another step forward, especially with so many of its competitors embracing new technology and moving towards ever-changing audience expectations. So, in 2024, the Dragon Ball Super Trading Card Game Fusion World incarnation was born, with all of its perks and new concepts. This iteration of the title has been designed to carry the company into the future, with Bandai Namco setting the stage for a title that has the unique ability to change with the times.

The first thing that fans need to know about the Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World edition is that, in its most basic form, it resembles a classic trading card game. There are still starter sets and booster packs, and those familiar with past iterations or with the competition will not feel too out of their depth with this game. The title does represent a new era for Dragon Ball in the TCG format though, and that means that a whole range of different cards are available, and fans will likely be looking to start their collections again based on upcoming releases.

That isn’t to say that previous cards should be thrown out though. In fact, Bandai Namco does not wish to alienate long-term fans and has made sure that there’s some sense of continuity between the games. Therefore, the rules remain the same, but the developers have promised that this is a more intuitive way to play, with fantastic additional combos and the opportunity to create battle strategies that take advantage of a stacked deck. For those that enjoy the aesthetic of the game, they should not fret, as the title will also be using the same artistic stylings, to maintain that sense of connection to the past.

  • The original Dragon Ball Trading Card Game ran from 2008 to 2009.
  • A new series debuted in 2017, bringing together Dragon BallDragon Ball ZDragon Ball GTDragon Ball Super and Super Dragon Ball Heroes.
  • 2024 marks the debut of Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World, a new take on the series.

The biggest headline concerning Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World is that there is now a digital edition available. Much like The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is taking the classic title onto mobile, Dragon Ball is also making that online shift with the option to play on PC. There are many benefits to this besides the crisp animations that come along with the game. For starters, this platform opens up players to global competition, allowing them to go against friends and strangers alike in a battle for the title of best.

But the game also promises a fusion between both the digital and physical realms, with multiple points of connection. Any card that is dropped within the physical world will be added to the digital game too. The rules will remain the same no matter where people are playing from, and the available cards will also be consistent with the same artwork. Players will be able to seamlessly move from one platform to the other. The digital space is not supposed to be a replacement for the real-world game, but rather an alternative avenue to enjoy the concept through. Ranked, Room, Free and Solo setups populate the digital version.

Goku’s Hyped Up Adventure in Demon Realm Begins in Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 3

With its first two episodes, Dragon Ball DAIMA has gotten off to the strongest start of any Dragon Ball anime since Dragon Ball Z. The Z-Warriors feel more like themselves than they have in a long time, the new concepts and lore are captivating, and there’s a sense of fun and adventure in every scene. With the first two episodes of DAIMA having set-up nearly everything fans need to know about the heroes, the villains, and the conflict between them, the action will really be getting started in Episode 3.

With Gomah having kidnapped Dende, it now falls to the de-aged Dragon Team to save him. Following the ending of Episode 3, Goku, Shin, and Glorio will travel to Demon Realm in Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 3, with Vegeta, Piccolo, and Bulma right behind them. There, they’ll face off against the Demon Realm’s rulers, as well as the Tamagami, and meet the highly anticipated Panzy.

Goku Travels to the Demon Realm at the End of DAIMA’s Second Episode

The True Adventure of Dragon Ball DAIMA is Finally Beginning

In Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 2, “Glorio,” Goku and the rest of the Dragon Team react to being transformed into kids. As they begin to investigate, Mr. Popo explains the wish Gomah made on the Dragon Balls, and tells them that Gomah and Degesu kidnapped Dende, and brought him with them back to Demon Realm. This revelation sends a chill down Shin’s spine, as Degesu is his brother, and he knows Gomah to be immensely powerful. Despite being smaller and weaker than he’s been in decades, Goku doesn’t hesitate when faced with the task before him, ready to fight Gomah and save Dende. However, because of how difficult Demon Realm is to reach, this is easier said than done.

Because of how Goku’s power has been reduced, he can’t simply use Instant Transmission to teleport to Dende, and he isn’t strong enough to fight Gomah’s forces on his own. Goku also lacks any knowledge of Demon Realm himself, making it exceptionally dangerous territory for him. The need to find solutions to these problems is what brings the main cast of Dragon Ball DAIMA together. Shin, the Supreme Kai, seems like he may actually be from Demon Realm, and possesses greater knowledge of it than any other member of the Dragon Team. Bulma, meanwhile, is charged with repairing a ship to travel to Demon Realm, while Vegeta desires to come with Goku so he can get his revenge on Gomah. And Piccolo, wanting to meet Neva, determines he’ll also come along as back-up.

While he’s waiting to begin his new adventure, Goku doesn’t just goof around. Instead, as he’s known to do, Goku pushes past the limitations his new body have put on him. He begins working to re-learn to fly, circumventing the need to retrieve his Flying Nimbus. Since he can’t magically make his limbs longer to regain his previous reach, he takes his original weapon, the mystical Power Pole, back from Master Roshi. Goku’s travel plans are then changed by the arrival of a demonic stranger who claims he can get him to Demon Realm ahead of schedule, and thus in time for DAIMA’s third episode. And based on the preview for the episode, it seems like Goku will once again be encountering dragons, right off the bat.

Sorry Goku Fans, But Vegeta Is The Best Character In Dragon Ball Super

Vegeta has been chasing Goku since their rivalry first began early in Dragon Ball Z. No matter how much Vegeta grew as a fighter, he could never seem to catch up to Kakarot for reasons he couldn’t quite understand. At a certain point, it became clear that Goku’s strength didn’t just come from his sheer potential for power, but rather from who he was as a person. It wasn’t until Vegeta grew as an individual that he could finally approach Goku’s level of power, and that wouldn’t finally come to fruition until Dragon Ball Super.

By the end of DBZ, Vegeta finally lets go of his pride, realizing it was the thing holding him back. Vegeta accepted that Goku was the best, because Goku was more than just a powerful fighter – his life experiences led him to become a truly great person. Vegeta’s path of self discovery was one of the highlights of DBZ’s storytelling, and it carried over to become a major part of Dragon Ball Super as well. Vegeta’s growth arc is arguably the greatest redemption story in anime history, and that’s a legacy even Goku can’t surpass.

Vegeta’s Character in Super is Consistent With His Growth From DBZ

Vegeta’s Ups and Downs Through Dragon Ball Z Made Him the Hero He Became in Super

Vegeta watches Goku fight Buu in Dragon Ball Z.

Vegeta’s story in Dragon Ball Super picks up exactly where it left off following the Buu Saga. Vegeta has gone through all the stages of becoming a better person two times over, and after relapsing as a Majin and making the ultimate sacrifice, there’s no way he could ever go back to becoming the villain again. That being the case, Vegeta settled into life as an earthling, accepting his place as one of the Z Fighters, and embracing his family as a father and husband.

Vegeta’s growth is immediately apparent in Super, when he stands up for Bulma against Beerus. While “my Bulma” has become a huge meme in the anime fandom, it’s actually so much more than that for Vegeta as a character. This is a big moment that shows how far Vegeta has come as a person. During the Android Saga in DBZ, Bulma and her newborn son fly in a helicopter near the battlefield as Android 20 attempts to make his escape from Vegeta. In an attempt to distract the Saiyan, 20 shot down the aircraft, sending Bulma and baby Trunks to their impending doom. They would have died if Future Trunks hadn’t rescued them – no thanks to Vegeta. Vegeta had no care for Bulma or his newborn son at the time. All he cared about was testing out his new Super Saiyan power against the Androids.

This attitude is in stark contrast to Vegeta’s “my Bulma” moment, displaying how he truly had changed. Unlike in the earlier arcs of DBZ, Vegeta has people he cares for who he is willing to lay his life on the line to protect. It’s not just all about power anymore to him. In fact, when Bulma was about to give birth to she and Vegeta’s second child, Bra, Vegeta even chose to stay behind and look after her rather than going to Beerus’ planet to train. This would have been an unprecedented decision in DBZ, but it makes sense by the time of DBS given how far he’s come. Vegeta’s standoffish personality and grumpy attitude never change, even in Super. However, his actions and his values have clearly changed in a way that is consistent with who he became at the end of DBZ’s Buu Saga.

Dragon Ball DAIMA May Have Brought Back Kid Goku’s Greatest Weakness

It’s amazing how much ground Dragon Ball DAIMA covers in episode 3 alone – from new lore drops about the Demon Realm to one of the best action sequences the series has seen, frankly, ever. As an anime that’s effectively presenting itself as a love letter to the original Dragon Ball, it’s hard not to draw comparisons to Kid Goku’s earliest adventures. Many of which feel deliberate, right down to Goku getting his Power Pole back. While it could very well simply be a one-off gag, Episode 3 might have reintroduced a very important weakness for Goku: hunger.

Concepts like endurance and stamina were fairly imporpant to Dragon Ball up until around the Saiyan saga, when characters became so powerful that battles would usually end through brute force before anyone could actually get tired. This idea got its start very early in the series. There was a time where Goku straight up couldn’t fight back if he was too hungry, a trait that almost cost him his life in Dragon Ball‘s very first story arc. With Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 3 acknowledging how much weaker Goku is in his kid form and the bar fight actively showing Goku getting stronger as he eats more, Goku might end up the Demon World’s resident foodie by the time the anime wraps up.

Yamcha Almost Killed Goku Because He Was Too Hungry To Defend Himself

It’s hard to believe, but Goku’s earliest defeat actually came from Yamcha of all people. In Chapter 8 of the Dragon Ball manga and Episode 5 of the Dragon Ball anime, Goku, Bulma, and Oolong are ambushed by Yamcha while traversing through the desert. Too hungry to properly fight back, Goku slowly starts losing to Yamcha. By the time Bulma ends and prematurely ends the fight, Yamcha is seen rushing towards Goku, who is doing nothing to fight back.

Goku exclaims a couple of times that he’s too hungry. It’s only after he eats in the following chapter that he gets the strength to fight back against Yamcha and actually defeat him. That said, Goku’s hunger made him so weak that Yamcha absolutely would have killed him. Yamcha was still in perfect shape to keep fighting by the time the fight ended, while Goku was completely out of commission. The last time this trait of Goku’s is in the original Dragon Ball in the Demon King Piccolo saga when he eats Yajirobe’s fish to regain his energy after being defeated by Tambourine.

A Dragon Ball DAIMA Animator Gave Fans a Sneak Peek in an Underrated Spring 2024 Anime

The long-awaited return of Dragon Ball didn’t disappoint with its explosive Episode 1 premiere of Dragon Ball Daima. However, an unforgettable moment in the series premiere might have been teased in an underrated anime series from the spring 2024 season.

As pointed out by Dragon Ball animation enthusiast AnimeAjay (@/AnimeAjay), the key animation of Vegeta sacrificing himself to destroy Majin Buu in the Dragon Ball Z recap scene in Dragon Ball Daima Episode 1 was handled by Shun Sawai. Sawai has worked on numerous projects, such as Oshi no Ko, Lupin the Third: Part 5 and Bocchi the Rock!. However, he’s also worked on the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie as a digital key animator and is a big fan of the franchise itself — so much so that he made an additional social media account dedicated to Dragon Ball fan art. Before the release of Dragon Ball Daima Episode 1, Sawai worked on another anime series that premiered during the spring 2024 season that parodied one of the most famous scenes in Dragon Ball history.

The Dragon Ball parody comes from Episode 3 of Oblivion Battery. Brilliant first-year student and baseball catcher Kei Kaname undergoes a Super Saiyan-like transformation that plays out almost exactly like Goku’s Super Saiyan awakening in the “Frieza” saga of Dragon Ball Z. However, Oblivion Battery doesn’t just parody Super Saiyan Goku but Super Saiyan Vegeta as well, as Kei’s transformation ends with a gigantic explosion of energy, just like the scene of Vegeta sacrificing himself to defeat Majin Buu that Sawai worked on in Dragon Ball Daima.

Oblivion Battery is based on the Shonen Jump+ online series by Eko Mikawa. It revolves around Taro Yamada, a student and former baseball player who quits the sport after being humiliated by two genius batteries (a pitcher and a catcher in baseball), Haruka Kiyomine and Kei Kaname. However, after transferring to a school with no baseball club, Taro is reunited with Haruka and the now amnesia-ridden Kei, who no longer remembers how to play baseball. As Taro helps Kei regain his memory by playing baseball with him and Haruka, he slowly regains his passion for the sport. Oblivion Battery ran for 12 episodes from April 10, 2024, to July 3, 2024, and was animated by Jujutsu Kaisen studio MAPPA.

Amusingly, Oblivion Battery isn’t the only anime that has referenced Dragon Ball this year. Episode 3 of The Elusive Samurai featured a cheeky reference to Goku with a religious-like character with his own version of the Spirit Bomb. Like Oblivion BatteryThe Elusive Samurai is a Shonen Jump series by Assassination Classroom author Yusei Matsui. Dragon Ball Daima, Oblivion Battery and The Elusive Samurai are all available to stream on Crunchyroll. New episodes of Dragon Ball Daima premiere every Friday on the anime streaming service.

How Dragon Ball DAIMA Reintroduces This Element That Most Fans Forgot About

Dragon Ball DAIMA’s first two episodes were some of the most amazing moments in anime history, as they totally redefined the Dragon Ball franchise by adding several new concepts, changing what fans knew about several popular characters, and taking the Dragon Ball franchise in a unique new direction. But one of the most fascinating parts of Dragon Ball DAIMA was how it reintroduced the idea of hunting for the Dragon Balls, giving them the magical aura they’ve lacked for many years.

The Dragon Balls were introduced in the first episode of the Dragon Ball anime and the first manga chapter. Goku and Bulma first meet when Bulma’s Dragon Radar picks up the Four Star Dragon Ball that Goku’s grandfather left him. Bulma explains to Goku that whoever can gather all seven Dragon Balls can summon Shenron and make a wish for whatever their heart desires. Eventually, after much bickering, Goku decides to join Bulma on her quest, and the pair set out to find all the Dragon Balls.

The Early Dragon Ball Hunts

In Early Sagas, Finding The Dragon Balls Was The Main Focus

This hunt is the focus of Dragon Ball’s first saga, the Emperor Pilaf Saga. While trying to recover the balls, Goku and Bulma encounter many characters who would become Dragon Ball mainstays, including Yamcha, Oolong, and Master Roshi. They would also learn that they were not the only people who wanted the Dragon Balls, leading to them clashing with the evil Emperor Pilaf. The saga ends with Emperor Pilaf collecting all the balls and using them to summon Shenron. However, before Pilaf can wish for world domination, Oolong interrupts and wishes for a pair of comfortable panties. Despite Pilaf’s protests, Shenron grants this wish before the balls return to stone and are scattered around the world again.

The Dragon Balls would again become the focus during the show’s third saga, the Red Ribbon Army Saga. During this saga, Goku embarks on a quest to recover Grandpa Gohan’s Four Star Dragon Ball, only to learn that the evil Red Ribbon Army was trying to collect all the balls so their leader, Commander Red, could make a wish. This leads to Goku traveling the globe, battling several of Red Ribbon’s generals as he does. But, when Bora dies defending Goku and Upa from Mercenary Tao, Goku vows to collect all the Dragon Balls and wish the man back to life, driving him to search for the balls even more intensely.

However, the fourth wish on the Dragon Balls was the one that dramatically changed the status quo. Made during Dragon Ball’s final saga, the Piccolo Jr. Saga, Yamcha wishes for every being killed by King Piccolo and his sons to be resurrected. While this wish was a massive and memorable moment that made perfect sense in the context of the arc, it represented the Dragon Balls shifting from magical relics that had to be chased to world reset buttons and a glorified taxi service.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Showrunner Suggests Final Season Leaves Door Open for More Stories

While Star Trek: Lower Decks will end soon, showrunner Mike McMahan isn’t fully closing the door on the USS Cerritos crew’s adventures.

“You do get to see everybody grow up in Season 5,” McMahan told Variety at San Diego Comic-Con regarding the future of Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, Sam Rutherford, and D’Vana Tendi and how their stories might continue post-cancelation. As he saw it, “There isn’t a natural end to being Lower Decks because I feel like I am still learning stuff all the time. So yes, the characters do go through a change this season, but ultimately where we end, you don’t feel like they aren’t still Lower Decks and that we couldn’t keep telling those kinds of stories.”

An official trailer for Lower Decks‘ final season premiered at Comic-Con, initially parodying Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country‘s teaser before previewing the Cerritos discovering interdimensional portals, angering Klingons, and getting into even more Starfleet hijinks. Continuing the show’s embrace of classic Trek references, McMahan also teased this season including “a piece of a legacy character, and Noël’s character, Tendi, gets to spend a lot of time with them.”

Season 5’s Central Arc Teased

He also tied Season 5’s central arc to “these space potholes that the U.S.S Cerritos is closing that are these rifts in space. We had been given enough of a heads up that this could potentially be our final season, and so I suddenly opened up the cupboard of ideas and was like, ‘Alright, what are some mechanics to get all sorts of crazy things to happen in this season?'”

Season 4 not only saw Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford promoted aboard the Cerritos, but reintroduced Season 2 Vulcan character T’Lyn as a new member of the ship. Its overarching storyline also tied Lower Decks to past Trek events, revealing the supposed destruction of vehicles across the galaxy to be part of a scheme by Star Trek: The Next Generation ex-cadet Nick Locarno to build a rogue fleet under his command. The season ended with the Cerritos crew triumphant but, due to a deal with Tendi’s family, she returned to Orion rather than remain with Starfleet. Additionally, Lower Decks made a live-action crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds last year, while the Cerritos was recently namedropped on an episode of Star Trek: Prodigy.

Other Trek news announced at San Diego Comic-Con included an official Strange New Worlds Season 4 clip and a trailer for the spinoff movie Star Trek: Section 31. Additionally, multiple actors were confirmed for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, including a returning Robert Picardo as Star Trek: Voyager‘s Doctor.
