Goku Slurps Up His Steak Like There’s No Tomorrow

Bulma’s parties have been a source of delicious food for Goku for years. And with the two being lifelong friends, there’s no one else who can feed him like she can. At Trunks’ birthday part in Episode 1, Goku visibly loves everything he puts in his mouth.

Besides a chicken wing and burgers, Goku also enjoys an undoubtedly expensive steak, courtesy of Earth’s richest woman. The way he slurps it up with ease makes it look absolutely delicious. It’s no surprise that Goku eats every bit of the steak before he flies off to train with Vegeta.

Goku Eats Steamed Buns and a Dumpling Before Leaving for the Demon Realm

After retrieving his Power Pole from Master Roshi in Episode 2, Goku returns to Capsule Corp for a meal. Once again taking care of her best friend, Bulma has a plate of food waiting for him. Yummy as it looks, Goku sadly doesn’t get to eat everything on it before the arrival of Glorio on Earth interrupts his meal.

Thankfully, Goku doesn’t travel to the Demon Realm on an entirely empty stomach. Goku eats a dumpling, and follows it up with a steamed bun. Had he gotten to continue eating, Goku would have enjoyed more steamed buns, chicken wings, rice, and more.

Every Food & Drink Goku Eats in Dragon Ball DAIMA

Countless Shōnen anime inspired by Dragon Ball star heroes with a deep love for food, and a seemingly supernatural ability to consume it. However, there is no character who appreciates food quite like Goku. While certain aspects of Goku’s characterization in Dragon Ball DAIMA are questionable, it understands this crucial part of who he is.

Goku’s bottomless stomach has him eating all kinds of new foods in Dragon Ball DAIMA’s Demon Realm. In nearly every episode, Goku gets hungry and fills his stomach with a new kind of food and, because of the series’ strange setting, most of what he’s eating is unlike anything he’s put in his mouth before. With how much Goku has been enjoying himself, this doesn’t seem to be an issue for him.

Goku Eats Chicken Wings and Burgers at Trunks’ Birthday Party

Appropriately for the legendary hero, the first thing Goku does in Dragon Ball DAIMA is eat. Introduced at Trunks’ birthday party alongside most of his friends, Goku is seated at a table with Krillin, Marron, and the birthday boy with plenty of food in front of him. Naturally, with Bulma knowing exactly what Goku likes, every piece of food in front of him is made with meat.

As Goku speaks to the Supreme Kai and Kibito, he can be seen eating a chicken leg. A platter of burgers is also seen in front of him. By the time Goku flies off to spar with Vegeta, the chicken leg and burgers have all been devoured, and Goku’s fat belly is full.

Dr. Arinsu Has Been Plotting to Conquer the Demon Realm Since Babidi Awakened Majin Buu

Even while Dabura was still the Supreme King of the Demon Realm, Arinsu was scheming to conquer her home dimension. During the events of Dragon Ball Z, Arinsu arrived on Earth. Staying in the shadows shortly after Babidi used Majin Vegeta’s energy to awaken Majin Buu. Avoiding the attention of the Z-Warriors, Arinsu bided her time until Vegeta fought Buu. When Vegeta blew himself up with his Final Explosion, he blew Buu away as well. Although Buu was ultimately unharmed by the attack, it did split his essence into thousands of tiny pieces.

When no one was watching, Arinsu collected one of the pieces of Buu’s essence for her own purposes. Buu’s pieces would soon serve as the key ingredient in the spell she was preparing to take over the Demon Realm, making Vegeta once again directly responsible for enabling the machinations of a main antagonist. Arinsu wouldn’t have been able to advance her plan without him. That said, as confident as Arinsu was in herself and her plan, she knew that something could go wrong, and that the Z-Warriors could eventually pose a threat to her – leading her to formulate a back-up plan.

Arinsu is Using Buu’s Essence to Create the Most Powerful Majin Ever

For as much work Dr. Arinsu has put into her back-up plan, her main plan revolves around the essence of Majin Buu she obtained prior to the beginning of Dragon Ball DAIMA. Aside from Glorio, Arinsu has Marba, the ancient sorceress truly responsible for creating Majin Buu, in her employ. With her own scientific genius and Marba’s mystical prowess, Arinsu is using her Buu piece to create a demon even more powerful than him.

While Glorio’s subservience to Arinsu is absolute, as is made clear by him referring to her in Episode 8 as “Arinsu-sama,” she needed to persuade Marba to work with her. To do this, she promised to grant Marba a position of high status after she becomes the Supreme Queen of the Demon Realm. Not only is Marba useful for creating new Majins, but for psychically connecting Arinsu to them. Because Arinsu has mixed her spit with Majin Buu’s essence, she’ll be able to telepathically speak with Marba’s new creations, just as Bibidi and Babidi were able to speak directly into Buu’s mind.

Gomah is an exceptionally powerful sorcerer, which is how he became the right-hand of Dabura in the first place. However, he isn’t nearly as strong as Majin Buu. When Gomah launched his attack on the Z-Warriors, he needed to use Earth’s Dragon Balls, not the Demon Realm’s, as he isn’t strong enough to defeat any of the Tamagami. By contrast, a de-aged Super Saiyan Goku has already defeated Tamagami 3 with minimal effort. With a warrior, or potentially multiple warriors, more powerful than Buu under her command, Arinsu will have more than enough power to overthrow Gomah, eliminate Degesu, and dispatch any Z-Warriors who attempt to stand against her.

While Arinsu’s full motivations are yet to be revealed, everything fans have learned about suggests she intends to rule as a cruel queen. According to Shin, she stayed in the Demon Realm when most of the other Glinds abandoned it because of her grand ambitions, and her desire for thrills. More Recently, she created the obedience collars that Dabura placed on every citizen of the Third Demon World, and which the Gendarmerie continue to use to torment the population.

Goku is Unknowingly Collecting the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls for Arinsu

In Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 4, “Chatty,” Goku changes his plan. While he initially intended to head straight to the First Demon World to fight and defeat Gomah, he instead chooses to collect the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls, so that he can return himself and his friends to adulthood before he fights Gomah. Despite how it seemed prior to the reveal that Glorio works for Arinsu, Goku didn’t make this choice on his own.

Arinsu wanted the Dragon Ball for herself and, with Glorio having spent enough time around Goku to know how to sway him, he told him about the Tamagami, emphasizing how strong they are. Glorio may have been directly taught how to manipulate others by Arinsu, as he’s able to take advantage of Goku’s love for fighting powerful opponents, and make him think that seeking out the Dragon Balls was his idea.

Obtaining the Demon Realm’s Dragon Balls is the main purpose of Arinsu’s back-up plan. Even though it would be beneficial for her if Goku and Gomah were to destroy each other, Arinsu’s main use for Goku is to travel across the three Demon Worlds, defeat all the Tamagamis, and claim all three Dragon Balls. Once he’s accomplished this, Glorio will be in position to betray him and steal the balls for her. If Arinsu’s main plan fails to net her dominion over the Demon Realm, she’ll be able to wish for the position of Supreme Queen using the Dragon Balls.

Dragon Ball DAIMA: Everything We Know About Arinsu & Glorio’s Plan

Dr. Arinsu is the older sister of the Supreme Kai & Degesu and has quickly established herself as the most cunning and charasmatic of Dragon Ball DAIMA’s villains. A brilliant scientist with no morals, Arinsu is determined to become the Supreme Queen of the Demon Realm. While she may not be able to fight like her brothers, she’s devised a strategy to place herself on Gomah’s throne.

With help from Glorio, Dr. Arinsu has devised one of the smartest evil plans in Dragon Ball history. Since before DAIMA began, Arinsu has been preparing her coup and she’s spent the anime’s run manipulating Goku, Gomah, and their respective factions from the shadows. It isn’t clear why Arinsu wishes to become a queen, but both her main plan and her back-up plan are both going perfectly, making it difficult to see how she can be stopped.

Super Saiyan 2 Is the Forgotten Middle Child of Goku’s Arsenal

In a world where style points count for something, SSJ2 reigns supreme. It’s a form that perfectly encapsulates Goku’s evolution as a fighter—more refined than his initial Super Saiyan transformation, but not bogged down by the impracticalities of forms like Super Saiyan 3. The original SSJ changed the game in anime history. Goku’s first transformation against Frieza was iconic, but visually, it’s pretty tame compared to what comes later. Super Saiyan 1 is Goku with blonde hair and a boost in muscle mass, but not much more. It’s nostalgic, but SSJ2 takes the same template and cranks it up with the added lightning and sharper details.

SSJ3 is the polar opposite of SSJ2. Where 2 is sleek and refined, SSJ3 is a visual spectacle that screams over-the-top. The elongated hair, the lack of eyebrows, and the massive surge in power make it one of Goku’s most radical forms. But while it looks intense, the form is impractical. It drains energy so fast that Goku can’t even sustain it for long without burning himself out. SSJ2, on the other hand, strikes a perfect balance between power and stamina.

When Dragon Ball Super introduced the God forms, it was clear the show was moving into a whole new realm of power scaling. Super Saiyan God is sleek, with Goku’s red hair and leaner physique giving off an almost ethereal vibe. The form is more about divine power than brute strength, and it feels like a natural evolution from Goku’s earlier forms. But in terms of raw visual impact, Super Saiyan 2 still looks cooler, even if God form is stronger.

Super Saiyan Blue took that divine energy of Super Saiyan God and mixed it with the explosive power of Super Saiyan. The result is a form that’s not only incredibly strong but also looks fantastic. The blue hair is a nice change from the usual gold, and it represents Goku’s mastery of both godly and mortal power. It’s flashy, for sure, but it lacks the raw, untamed feel that Super Saiyan 2 brings to the table. Then there’s Ultra Instinct—the pinnacle of Goku’s transformations. Ultra Instinct isn’t just a form, it’s a whole new way of fighting, relying on pure instinct rather than thought. The silver hair, the calm expression, the glowing aura—it’s a masterpiece in terms of design and concept. But Ultra Instinct is so polished, that it almost feels like Goku has transcended the chaotic energy that made his earlier transformations so exciting. Super Saiyan 2, with its wild aura and electric energy, feels raw and visceral by comparison.

Goku’s Coolest-Looking Form is the One He Never Bothers Using

When fans think of Goku’s legendary transformations, most immediately jump to original Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Blue or Ultra Instinct. Some even think of the meme-worthy Super Saiyan 3 with its flowing mane of golden hair and lack of eyebrows. But there’s one form that always seems to fly under the radar, despite being arguably one of Goku’s most visually stunning—and that’s Super Saiyan 2.

It’s the form with the perfect balance of raw power, sleek aesthetics, and that electrifying aura, yet Goku seems to treat it like a relic of the past. This sleek, lightning-wrapped form had its prime in the Dragon Ball Z era, only to later be overshadowed by shiny new power-ups. But why doesn’t Goku ever bother using this form, despite how cool it looks?

Super Saiyan 2 Made Its Debut During the Cell Games Saga

First introduced during the Cell Games saga, Super Saiyan 2 was a monumental leap in power and aesthetic. It wasn’t Goku who debuted it, though—it was Gohan. When Gohan snapped during the battle against Perfect Cell, he revealed his SSJ2 form (having first achieved it offscreen while training in the hyperbolic chamber) and dished out one of the most satisfying beatdowns in anime history. This transformation was visually distinct, with the aura crackling like a thunderstorm and the hair standing even spikier than the usual Super Saiyan look. Add the electricity coursing around the body, and it becomes a form that screams raw power and intensity. For fans of DBZ, this was the moment. Gohan’s ascension to Super Saiyan 2 was not just powerful—it was legendary.

Then Goku got his hands on it. During the Majin Buu saga, Goku unveiled that he, too, had reached SSJ2. While it didn’t come with the same earth-shattering emotional baggage that Gohan’s transformation carried, Goku still made it look effortlessly cool. His duel with Majin Vegeta during this saga saw both Saiyans at their SSJ2 peaks. They fought to a brutal standstill, with their hair spiked to infinity, lightning zapping around them, and fists moving faster than sound. Goku and Vegeta both looked like gods of destruction well before that title officially entered the Dragon Ball lore. But after that fight, Goku seemed to forget SSJ2 even existed. He moved on to bigger (and bluer) things, leaving Super Saiyan 2 in the dust.

Vegeta’s New Form Suits Him Better Than Goku’s

Beyond just their interpersonal relationships, one of the main ways characters display growth in Dragon Ball is through the fights. Actions have always spoken louder than words in shonen’s greatest battle manga series, and that doesn’t change in Super. One of the biggest ways Vegeta and Goku grow in Super is through their new transformations. Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego are excellent new additions to the series that emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of the characters well. In fact, these new forms seem to focus in on Goku and Vegeta’s character flaws, showing how their mastery can lead to even greater strength.

With Ultra Instinct, Goku has to fight without thinking, allowing his body to move at will. This should actually be a fairly natural progression for Goku, because thinking was never his strong suit anyway. However, it’s more than just freeing the mind, but gaining mastery over the mind’s connection to the body that’s important. Goku has to let go of all emotion, which requires a state similar to meditation during battle. While Goku always fought with emotion, calming his emotions was actually somewhat harmful to his growth. This was shown when he eventually reached the stage of Mastered Ultra Instinct, in which he could utilize his emotions while still gaining the benefits of the Ultra Instinct technique. Whereas Vegeta utilizes his greatest weakness to make him stronger, Goku seems unable to hone his own weakness in the same way.

For Vegeta, Ultra Ego lets him tap into a part of himself that he pushed to the wayside in becoming a family-man and protector of Earth. There was always a deep sense of pride and egoism in Vegeta’s fighting style, and that was always part of what made him unique from Goku as a fighter. That mercilessness was something he had to bury within himself to grow as a person, but it inadvertently stunted his growth as a warrior. By accepting who he is, Ultra Ego allows Vegeta to let loose because he knows in his heart that he can never go back to who he was before. No matter how much he gives in to the powers of destruction, Vegeta doesn’t just embrace destruction wantonly. He does so through careful introspection and with a heavy heart that takes into account the pain he and his saiyan people had caused through that very same destructive power.

Vegeta’s growth throughout DBZ and Super has been about him accepting his faults, acknowledging his mistakes, and finally letting go of his foolish pride. In the Ultra Ego transformation, Vegeta lets loose with his characteristic pride like never before, making it a full circle moment for him. It’s only because Vegeta’s ego no longer defines him that he can fully utilize it to its full potential. Vegeta has steadily continued to improve and learn valuable lessons in Super that he actively applies to change as a person. In contrast, Goku is still the same character fans know and love in Super, though there are aspects of his growth that seem to have taken steps backwards in ways. Like any real person, Vegeta is constantly learning and growing, making him feel like a much more relatable and realistic character than Goku could ever be.

Vegeta has still yet to definitively surpass Goku in terms of pure strength, as the two are still pretty much completely equal. However, in becoming Goku’s equal, Vegeta shows how he has grown even more than Goku has. Vegeta’s character flaws held him back from surpassing Goku in the past, so the fact that he is finally on par with Goku in Super shows how much he has changed from who he was in DBZ. Ultimately, Vegeta only became the person he is due to the lessons he learned from hanging around Goku. It may be time for Goku to learn a thing or two from Vegeta.

Goku Takes Two Steps Backwards in Super

While Vegeta has shown incredible growth throughout his life, Super seems to indicate something of the opposite for his rival. At least at first. Goku’s character throughout Super has been infamously inconsistent with his own growth as it was shown in Dragon Ball. Goku started out as a naive and innocent child who knew nothing of the world outside the forrest where he grew up.

Over time, Goku was exposed to more and more of the world through his adventures, and he grew and matured because of that. While Goku always remained a hopeless idealist who always saw the good in others, he did learn and grow from his mistakes. Goku may have been ditsy and airheaded, but he was never stupid. Goku showed numerous times throughout Dragon Ball that he was the smartest person on the battlefield, even if that intelligence didn’t translate into book smarts.

All the growth and development Goku underwent as a character prior to Super was vital to Dragon Ball’s narrative, because it’s literally the story of his life. Goku grows from an immature child in early DB to an intelligent man who can use his lifetime of experience to guide his children by the end of DBZ. Goku still makes mistakes, but he’s always someone Gohan and Goten can look up to and aspire to be like.

Infamously, Goku’s development as a character takes a strange turn in Dragon Ball Super. It became a meme among the fandom that Super’s Goku had lost a great deal of his growth from throughout early Dragon Ball, and that’s understandable. In Super, Goku does act ditsier and just flat-out dumber than he did by the end of the DBZ anime. While much of the hate towards Goku’s character in Super is ultimately overblown, there’s definitely merit to the concern. There are times when he seems to have forgotten important lessons from his past, and there are moments when he seems to make mistakes he would have learned from in DBZ.

For example, during Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku sees Vegeta meditating and asks him what he’s doing. Goku seems confused as to why Vegeta would just be sitting in one spot instead of working out and training. This is an extremely strange moment for his character because Goku had meditated multiple times in the past. This scene was altered in the manga to avoid this continuity issue, but it’s ultimately just the most prominent example of how Goku has lost some of his development from DBZ.

This wasn’t just a mistake on Akira Toriyama’s part, either. During an interview with Wired, Toriyama stated that he was dissatisfied with how heroic Goku became in the original DBZ anime. That being the case, it’s likely that he purposely made Goku a bit more bubbly and silly in Super because he didn’t like how heroic he became in the original DBZ anime. This was a conscious attempt on Toriyama’s part to retcon an aspect of Goku’s personality he didn’t like, but it came at the consequence of making noticeable changes to a beloved character.

Ultimately, Goku is a character whose growth has always been subtle, because even as he has learned throughout his life, his personality hardly changes. He’ll always be a carefree and gentle heart who will get serious when it comes to a fight, and that should never change. Even so, Goku’s penchant for forgetting the lessons of his past has deservedly earned his characterization in Super criticism. In comparison to Vegeta, Goku never really had to grow much in Super anyway – he just had to remain the same Goku fans have always known and loved. In a way, he does that, but it’s unfortunate that he often forgets where he came from.
