50 Years Ago, Captain America Adopted a Brand-New Superhero Identity

In every Look Back, we examine a comic book issue from 10/25/50/75 years ago (plus a wild card every month with a fifth week in it). This time around, we head to September 1974 to see the debut of Captain America’s new superhero identity, Nomad, the man without a country!

It’s fascinating how there is such an interesting balancing act with comic book history when it comes to certain types of tropes. What I mean is that there are certain kinds of stories that, depending on the particular era of comic book history, are either notable or commonplace, and that boils entirely down to the way that comic books handled continuity. If you are telling just one-off stories, like comic books did for MANY years during the Golden Age and most of the SIlver Age, you could try all sorts of crazy ideas, because everything would be back to normal by the end of the issue. Nowadays, we are ALSO used to comic books trying drastically different things all of the time, since it is so much harder to get readers to pay attention to things.

That, therefore, leaves an interesting period in time when comic books had real continuity, so a major change would last for more than an issue, and that readers weren’t used to this sort of thing, therefore giving the changes real gravity to them. This is a long way towards explaining why it is was such a big deal fifty years ago when Steve Rogers not only abandoned his identity as Captain America, but adopted a brand-new superhero identity in September 1974’s Captain America #180 (by Steve Englehart, Sal Buscema, and Vince Colleta.

Why did Captain America abandon his identity?

As I detailed in a recent Look Back, Captain America was framed for murder, and was forced to go on the run, hunted down by a supervillain, Moonstone, who was pretending to be a superhero. Cap and his partner, Falcon, discovered that this had all been engineered by a shadowy organization known as the Secret Empire, who planned on using a faked attack by a flying ship powered by mutants to attack Washington D.C. The only people who could stop the mutants were the Secret Empire, and the President would then declare martial law, and install the Secret Empire as the rulers of the country.

Captain America foiled the plot, and exposed all the lies, but was shocked to discover that the head of the Secret Empire was actually the then-current President of the United States, who then took his own life in the Oval Office in front of a shocked Captain America.

Captain America struggled with his role as the symbol of America, and ultimately decided that he could no longer, in good conscience, call himself Captain AMERICA, so he quit in Captain America #176…

For the next two issues, the Falcon was forced to fight crime by himself without Captain America, while Steve Rogers adjusted to no longer being a superhero. Then, in Captain America #179, Steve and his girlfriend, Sharon Carter, were accosted by what appeared to be a supervillain. Steve was forced to subdue the “villain” in his civilian identity, and it turned out to be his Avenger teammate, Hawkeye, who was trying to show Steve how he really was too good to STOP being a superhero. He said that if Steve really didn’t want to be Captain America anymore, then fine, but he should be SOME sort of superhero.

A Nightmare on Elm Street akan menuju rumah streaming baru menjelang Halloween 2024.

Dragon Ball Is Arguably The Best Of The Franchise (1986–1989)

Dragon Ball is a franchise that extends far beyond Super Saiyans, power levels, and villains whose ashes literally need to be obliterated from existence for them to actually die. Any series that has run as long as Dragon Ball has gone through several phases. Although the original manga was simply titled Dragon Ball, Toei Animation chose to split their adaptations up.

In addition, the anime extended into an official sequel in the form of Dragon Ball GT. Even without Toriyama’s involvement, Dragon Ball has been continuously pumping out new content for years. The video games took the place of the anime as the “main” product for a time, but Dragon Ball Super and the newest film — Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero — have ensured that the series’ anime is here to stay. Overall, it’s tough to follow the Dragon Ball series in order, but it’s extremely rewarding for fans who do. This is especially the case with the new Dragon Ball DAIMA anime on the way.

Dragon Ball Is Arguably The Best Of The Franchise (1986–1989)

Simply titled Dragon Ball, the series’ original anime adaptation is arguably the best of the bunch. Not only does the anime adapt its story arcs far better than the more action-oriented Dragon Ball Z, but Dragon Ball also doesn’t suffer from nearly as much inconsistent animation or awkward filler. Dragon Ball‘s filler contributions tend to add depth to the main story, expanding on what was already present in the manga.

Interestingly, Dragon Ball’s shift into Dragon Ball Z can be traced back to the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, when most of the staff that would eventually make up DBZ started working on the series. In terms of pacing, the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai is much slower than everything that came before, really getting the most out of every single moment. While this style of pacing would later become a massive problem for Dragon Ball Z, it gives DB‘s last tournament some added gravitas. Dragon Ball is the first in the Dragon Ball watch order, which makes it the perfect place to start.

Jim Lee’s Revival of an ’80s Mecha Sensation — Robotech!

Robotech has a complicated history in the world of anime, not only due to complaints about the liberties taken with the source material but also because the actual creation of the property itself is quite convoluted. The story begins in the early 1980s when American film and television company Harmony Gold saw potential in exporting anime (then called “Japanimation”) to the West.

The first “anime” for many viewers, Robotech is as iconic as it is controversial. Many have yearned for a Robotech reboot, regardless of what medium it shows up in. Ironically, such a reboot was previously attempted in comic books, with a publisher synonymous with the grim and gritty 1990s involved in the venture. While it’s largely forgotten nowadays, this brief revival attempted to capture the spark of what made the original series such a hit.

Updated by Timothy Blake Donohoo on September 25, 2024: Robotech is one of the most iconic and infamous anime franchises of all time, with plenty of detractors and fans. Thus, there was an attempted Robotech reboot by a once-popular comic book publisher. It’s now long forgotten and lost to print, but it represents an important part of the brand’s disparate story.

DC, Transformers, and So Many Legal Issues

As many fans are aware, the show that became known as Robotech in the West is actually an amalgam series of sorts. Screenwriter Carl Macek was hired to adapt the 1982 series Super Dimension Fortress Macross for daily American syndication. Still, the weekly series didn’t have the requisite 65 episodes required for a syndicated series. A decision was made to pair Macross with two shorter anime, 1984’s Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and 1983’s Genesis Climber MOSPEADA, to create an 85-episode series.

The disparate continuities would be explained as time jumps between episodes, but this didn’t make things easier regarding marketing and promotion. Complicating matters for the brand would be American model kit manufacturer Revell’s existing deal with the producers of Macross and a few other anime studios for a line of mecha scale-model kits imported from Japan. Revell called their two model lines Robotech Defenders and Robotech Changers. Revell even had a deal with DC Comics to promote Robotech Defenders as a limited series.

Revell’s existing contracts prevented Harmony Gold from producing merchandise for their animated adaptation of Macross, and much of the appeal of entering animation in the 1980s was indeed the merchandising profits. Harmony Gold entered a co-licensing agreement with Revell, one with their 85-episode series entitled Robotech. The co-licensing deal enabled Revell’s nascent Robotech to benefit from a daily animated series promoting the brand and Harmony Gold to pursue other merchandising opportunities, like an action figure line from Matchbox.

As for DC’s two-issue Robotech Defenders comic, which had nothing to do with Harmony Gold, the continuity established by writer Andy Helfer and artist Judith A. Hunt would be unceremoniously declared “non-canon” and forgotten. However, the comic used the same Robotech logo as the Harmony Gold production.

Considering that the toy was designed by mecha pioneer Shoji Kawamori — who also designed the characters Westerners now know as Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Prowl, and Ratchet for Japan’s preceding Diaclone line — Transformers fans could understandably feel as if Jetfire fit right in. Kawamori’s time freelancing for Diaclone predates his development of Macross, but the designs have noticeable consistency. The character of Jetfire was intended to maintain his Macross design in both robot and vehicle mode in animation. However, complications with the Japanese toy rights had the Autobot renamed Skyfire in the Transformers animated series (which also aired in Japan) and redesigned to remove obvious similarities to the Valkyrie.

Harmony Gold and Matchbox, meanwhile, couldn’t release a robot-to-vehicle Valkyrie toy, arguably the Robotech cartoon’s signature vehicle, thanks to Hasbro’s existing deal. Instead, Robotech fans had to be content with Matchbox’s non-transformable version with some “legally distinct” design changes. Later model kits for the Macross series have been released in various anime hobby shops, though any new Robotech toys have been non-existent for decades.

Likewise, later toys for Jetfire in the Transformers series have eschewed and evoked designs from the original toy line and cartoon. Examples include the designs seen in the Unicron Trilogy of anime, which share the original Jetfire’s classic white and red color scheme but have a much different aesthetic. On the other hand, his most recent action figures have combined these Generation 1 designs, even retaining the “gerwalk” transformation that’s essentially a halfway point between jet and robot.

Is the New Transformers Movie Already a Box Office Flop? What Happened?

Transformers One is the latest entry in the venerable movie franchise based on Hasbro’s popular toys, and the first theatrical animated entry in decades. Transformers One has received positive reviews, but this isn’t translating into much wider attention. Due to a tepid opening weekend at the box office, it’s now questionable if the animated movie will become profitable. It’s currently made just around $40 million USD on a budget of $75 million, and while this isn’t entirely terrible, the movie’s long-term prospects aren’t great.

The reasons for Transformers One landing with such a thud at the box office are many, and they stem most from how the movie’s content has been marketed to audiences. Said consumers are likely tired and wary of the brand on the big screen, namely after several critical duds. Add in a less than prime release date, and it makes sense that Transformers One isn’t rolling out to major financial success.

Transformers One’s Marketing Did Not Target the Right Audience

Easily the biggest issue with Transformers One is the movie’s tone, namely in terms of how it was portrayed in trailers. Ever since the film’s first trailer dropped, many fans complained about how overly comedic and unnecessarily lighthearted everything was. The opening scene of the first trailer was essentially a joke between the Transformers that become Optimus Prime and Megatron, and this didn’t set the right stage for what fans should expect.

Subsequent previews of the movie doubled down on this tone, leaving older fans disappointed. In terms of the film being a “kids movie,” this defense was many times rebutted by the fact that the trailer for the original 1986 The Transformers: The Movie showcased how adventurous and action-packed everything was. Overall, there wasn’t a precedent for focusing so much on humor, namely when the movie itself isn’t nearly as overly comedic.

It isn’t as if trying so desperately to target young children worked, as shown in the lack of overall interest in the movie. If anything, the film and its marketing should have been pitched to a slightly older audience. This could have given it a much stronger sense of “cool,” attracting young adults, their parents and their younger siblings. In trying to be so family friendly, the movie’s marketing only made the film seem generic and not compelling at all. Ultimately, it was a failed gambit to garner a younger audience that didn’t seem to care at all. Even the positive reviews didn’t help, which spoke to another issue with the film.

Isshiki pun hampir berhasil menggunakan Kawaki sebagai wadah reinkarnasinya. Salah satu eksperimen tersebut adalah menanamkan teknologi ninja ke dalam setiap tubuh dari anggota Kara, termasuk Kawaki.

Teknologi yang berada dalam tubuh Kawaki memungkinkannya untuk perubahan tertentu terhadap selnya sehingga punya kekuatan super unik layaknya kekkei genkai. Jadi, Kawaki dapat mengubah bagian tubuh tertentunya menjadi berbagai macam bentuk, persis seperti kemampuannya Jugo. Contohnya saat ia mengubah tangan kanannya menjadi besar dan keras sewaktu bertarung dengan Garo.

Lalu, teknologi ninja yang berada dalam tubuhnya juga memungkinkan Kawaki untuk memancarkan ledakan energi yang sangat besar dan juga mematikan. Oh ya, selain untuk menyerang musuh, teknologi ninja yang dalam tubuh Kawaki juga bikin ia bisa melakukan regenerasi sel lebih cepat sehingga dapat lebih mudah sembuh jika mengalami cedera parah sekalipun.

3. Menguasai Shinjutsu berkat segel Karma-nya

Kawaki memang sempat kehilangan segel Karma-nya setelah gagal jadi wadah reinkarnasinya Isshiki Otsutsuki. Namun, berkat eksperimen Amado, Kawaki jadi kembali memiliki segel Karma tanpa harus menjadi tumbal reinkarnasi salah satu anggota klan Otsutsuki. Tak cuma itu, Kawaki bahkan jadi memiliki berbagai kekuatan milik Isshiki Otsutsuki.

Kekuatan Isshiki pun jauh berbeda ketimbang ninja pada umumnya. Jika kekuatan ninja biasa disebut ninjutsu, kekuatan dari Isshiki merupakan shinjutsu. Buat kamu yang belum tahu, shinjutsu adalah teknik tertinggi dalam semesta anime Naruto yang hanya dimiliki para dewa, termasuk klan Otsutsuki. Bahkan, shinjutsu merupakan “bapak” dari lahirnya berbagai teknik jutsu lainnya, termasuk ninjutsu.

Artinya, Kawaki kini sudah memiliki kekuatan setara dewa dan bahkan layak mendapat sebutan sebagai karakter utama terkuat pada anime Boruto untuk saat ini. Salah satu teknik shinjutsu andalan Kawaki adalah Sukunahikona yang membuatnya bisa mengubah ukuran tubuhnya jadi sangat kecil layaknya Isshiki. Namun, Kawaki terbilang menguasai seluruh kekuatan yang sebelumnya Isshiki miliki.

4. Dari anak adopsi, kini Kawaki jadi anak kandungnya Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki selaku Hokage Ketujuh sempat mengadopsi Kawaki setelah mengetahui berbagai kekerasan yang ia alami selama bersama Isshiki dan Kara. Mengingat sejak dulu selalu mengalami kekerasan, Kawaki pun langsung merasakan kehangatan dari Naruto. Bahkan, Kawaki terbilang jadi sangat sayang terhadap Naruto melebihi Boruto yang merupakan anak kandung sang Hokage Ketujuh.

Hal ini pun membuat Kawaki jadi rela melakukan apapun untuk melindungi Naruto dari segala macam ancaman, termasuk membunuh Boruto sekalipun. Soalnya, Boruto memiliki Momoshiki Otsutsuki dalam tubuhnya yang pada suatu saat bisa membahayakan keselamatan Naruto. Namun, setelah upaya membunuh Boruto gagal, Kawaki justru meminta bantuan Eida buat menjadikannya anak kandung Naruto.

Pada akhirnya, Eida pun menggunakan shinjutsu miliknya untuk mengubah ingatan seluruh umat manusia bahwa Kawaki adalah anak kandung Naruto, bukan Boruto. Akibatnya, Boruto kini justru menjadi musuh Konohagakure dan sejumlah desa lainnya. Sementara itu, Kawaki berubah nama menjadi Kawaki Uzumaki, anak pertama dari Naruto Uzumaki.

5. Penampilannya berbeda dengan saat pertama kali muncul

Sedikit fakta menarik tentang penampilan Kawaki pada manga-nya. Pada saat pertama kali muncul debut pada cover chapter pertama manga-nya, Kawaki tampil dengan wujud wajah yang lebih muda sampil mengenakan sambil mengenakan jaket biru tua dengan kaus berwarna merah muda. Lalu, tato yang ada di bawah matanya juga berwujud seperti pisau kecil.

Penampilan tersebut tentunya beda jauh dengan penampilan Kawaki setelah muncul pada berbagai chapter manga Boruto berikutnya. Sebab, Kawaki terlihat menggunakan jaket biru tua dengan kaus yang berwarna hijau. Selain itu, tato pada bagian bawah mata Kawaki juga berubah menjadi angka romawi dari angka sembilan yang juga dimiliki oleh sejumlah anggota Kara lainnya.
