Sokka is one of the best and most beloved characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender. His signature comedy and singular determination help him stand out as a Non-Bender – even among his Bender friends and enemies. Therefore, it is devastating to learn in The Legend of Korra that not only did Aang die, but Sokka had passed as well.
Sokka is a staple character who helps the others get perspective. He is also one of the most imaginative and is known for thinking outside the box. Having both Sokka and Aang die and leaving Katara behind seems like a poor choice on the writers’ part. Not only did Katara lose her husband, but her brother as well. Not seeing Sokka as an old man, and not knowing how he died feels like a disservice to fans who loved him so much.
Who Is Sokka in Avatar The Last Airbender?
Sokka is from the Southern Water Tribe. He is the eldest of two children born to Hakoda and Kya. Unlike his sister, Katara, Sokka is not a Waterbender but is a self-proclaimed warrior at the beginning of the story (he rightfully earns the title later as the story progresses). Sokka is a very proud young man who wants nothing more than to be like his warrior father. He has some issues with feeling like he and other males are superior to females at first, but he quickly learns that girls and women are just as capable as men and boys.
Sokka is mostly known for his sarcasm and skepticism about all the magic that happens in the series. He has a surprisingly analytical mind that is often overlooked. However, when he gets the chance, he shines with his creative problem-solving and logistical skills. Additionally, Sokka loves all kinds of food (especially meat) and often gets into trouble over food. Finally, Sokka would do anything to protect the ones he loves.
What Made Sokka Such A Great Character?
Sokka Is The Comic Relief With Character Development
Throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka has always been one of fans’ favorite characters. His signature brand of wit and corny jokes are just the right amount of charisma to make him a beloved cast member. His jokes and one-liners are some of the most quoted bits of dialogue from the series. Sokka also has an unconventional way of solving problems, which makes him unpredictable, but adored. Scenes like the Haiku Room and his painting with Master Piandao are particular standouts that show off Sokka’s artistic, yet hilarious, side.
Sokka is also a tenacious fighter. He stands his ground against many opponents who are stronger than him and have magical powers. Although he is standoffish and contrary in the beginning of the series, he grows organically with the story. His experiences with a variety of new acquaintances help him to change his mind and come to respect the people in his life.
Why Does Sokka’s Death Hurts His Fans?
When The Legend of Korra was announced, Avatar: The Last Airbender fans were elated. This was their chance to see some of their favorite characters again. However, when Katara was introduced alone, fans were immediately disappointed. Aang had to die for there to be a new Avatar, so that was understandable. But Sokka also dying was more than audiences bargained for. It was crushing to learn that their favorite character wasn’t going to get a chance to shine in the new show along with the rest of his friends.
It was even more frustrating when fans were kept in the dark about how Sokka died. Sokka helped shape the way the world is at the beginning of The Legend of Korra just as much – if not more – than most of the other Gaang members. Giving him an offscreen death cheated his fans out of seeing the kind of man Sokka would have become in the new story. Yes, there are flashbacks of Sokka in The Legend of Korra, but fans deserved more than that – especially for one of the main three characters of the original series.
