Dragon Ball Daima is Akira Toriyama’s final gift to fans, coming out on October 11. There’s a lot to unwrap about the new series and where it fits in the Dragon Ball franchise. The prolific battle shonen is still going strong after nearly four decades and this year’s Dragon Ball Daima will celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary with a brand-new story. Fans have been anxious for any new Dragon Ball content, even if Dragon Ball Super’s manga continues to turn out new chapters and periodic feature films hit the cinema.
It’s very rare for a completely new Dragon Ball entity to get announced and catch audiences by surprise, but fans are dying to see Toriyama’s final contribution to his beloved franchise. There’s no doubt that Dragon Ball Daima is 2024’s most highly-anticipated anime. The series has embraced secrecy and many of its biggest revelations won’t be clear until it makes its debut. That being said, Dragon Ball Daima is closer than ever to being released, and key information has already been disclosed.
Updated by Arthur Goyaz, October 04, 2024: After a long wait, Dragon Ball Daima is finally making its debut on October 11. This article was updated to discuss everything fans need to know about the new Dragon Ball anime.
Dragon Ball fans know that they can expect to see most of their favorite characters in Dragon Ball Daima, but most of the anime’s grander narrative is still being kept a mystery ahead of the series’ release on October 11. The main feature in Daima’s marketing and in the anime’s story seems to be the magically de-aged versions of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and the majority of the Dragon Ball cast. Even characters like Shin, Kibito, and Hercule Satan are not immune to this metamorphosis. Dragon Ball Daima’s plot will revolve around Goku and company’s attempts to figure out what’s happened to them and reverse this cruel curse, embarking on grand adventures and engaging in dangerous battles along the way.
Dragon Ball Daima is an original series that’s not based on a Dragon Ball manga, which is why fans have so many questions and theories. That’s not to say that a manga won’t follow the anime’s debut without Toriyama, but this will likely be dependent upon the series’ success. Dragon Ball Daima‘s title also provides a hint regarding what audiences will see in the new series. There are plenty of occasions where an anime’s extension chooses to delineate that it’s different from its predecessor through the addition of a random letter, such as Sailor Moon S, Saber Marionette J, and of course, Dragon Ball Z.
However, this title suffix can also serve a greater purpose, such as how Dragon Ball GT stands for “Grand Tour,” in reference to the galactic journey that kicks off the franchise. Toriyama had revealed that “Daima” is ultimately a made-up word, but that it’s possible to translate it to “Evil” in English. Dragon Ball Daima’s latest trailer has confirmed that the anime will take place in the Demon Realm, perfectly connecting with the idea of exploring a new evil world.
