Synopsis of Spice and Wolf: The Story of a Merchant and a Wolf -Ookami to Koushinryou or also known as Spice and Wolf is an adventure, fantasy and romance themed anime adapted from a light novel of the same title written by Isuna Hasekura with Juu Ayakura as the illustrator.

This series with historical flavor may sound a bit foreign to some anime fans, because its popularity is not as big as other anime. It could be said that Spice and Wolf is quite underrated, considering the quality of the series that needs to be taken into account.

1. Sinopsis Spice and Wolf

Spice and Wolf tells the story of a legend related to the God of Harvest in the form of a wolf girl named Holo. It is said that Holo has blessed a small town called Pasloe with abundant annual harvests.

The entire city population respected the God of Harvest. Unfortunately, as time went by, Holo’s existence began to be forgotten and the blessings of the harvest were seen as merely the result of human labor.

It turns out that the existence of the Harvest God Holo is not just folklore. Now, the wolf girl is right in front of Kraft Lawrence, a talented and intelligent traveling salesman.

Lawrence didn’t believe what he saw at first. However, in the end he immediately realized Holo’s potential as a negotiator, then made a deal with the God of Harvest who asked that she be taken to his hometown in the north.

2. Staff and voice actors

There are two versions of the Spice and Wolf anime adaptation. The first adaptation was worked on by Studio Imagin and aired from January to March 2008 with a total of 13 episodes. The second season was broadcast the following year, namely during Summer 2009, where the studios working on it were Brain’s Base and Marvy Jack.

This 2008 adaptation was directed by Takeo Takahashi, written by Naruhisa Narakawa, and produced by Tatsuya Ishiguro, Tomoko Suzuki, Naomi Tokuda, Masanobu Arakawa, Yuuichi Matsunaga, Tomohiro Fujita.

While the reboot version is entitled Ookami to Koushinryou: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf or Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, the anime studio responsible for producing it is Passione. This studio is also known for its role in the series Mieruko-chan, Joshikousei no Mudazukai, Rokka no Yuusha, and several Higurashi franchises .

For Spice and Wolf (2024), there are the roles of Takeo Takahashi and Hijiri Sanpei as directors, Tatsuhiko Urahata as script writer, and the production team: Shoichi Horita, Tomohisa Kondou, Mirai Yamauchi, Akihiro Sotokawa, and Megumi Miyahara.

There are no changes to the line of voice actors involved in the production of the Ookami to Koushinryou anime , both in the original adaptation version and the remake . There are Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu who voice the 2 main characters, namely Kraft Lawrence and Holo.

Apart from that, there are Tomokazu Sugita as Yarei, Kaori Nazuka as Chloe, Mai Nakahara as Nora Arendt, Saeko Chiba as Fermi Amarti, Akeno Watanabe as Dian “Diana” Rubens, Rikiya Koyama as Marc Cole, and many more.

3. Light novel adaptation

As previously mentioned, Spice and Wolf or Ookami to Koushinryou is based on a light novel by Isuna Hasekura and Juu Ayakura who did the illustrations.

This light novel was first published on February 10 2006 under the auspices of the publisher ASCII Media Works and continues to this day. The novel Spice and Wolf also received an English language license in September 2008 by publisher Yen Press.

Apart from the novel which focuses on the main plot, there is a spin-off novel entitled Wolf and Parchment: New Theory Spice & Wolf which focuses on the story of Lawrence and Holo’s child, Myuuri.

Besides the anime series, Spice and Wolf also received a manga adaptation in November 2007 under the same publisher as the light novel. This seinen demographic manga was illustrated by Keito Koume and ended at the end of December 2017.

4. Jadwal tayang Ookami to Koushinryou 2024

The remake version entitled Ookami to Koushinryou: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf or Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf is one of the anime whose release is highly anticipated in Spring 2024.

This project was first announced at the same time as the 15th anniversary of the light novel , on February 25 2022.

Singer Hana Hope will perform the opening song titled “Tabi no Yakue”, while the ending song titled “Andante” will be sung by ClariS.
